If you love it and are going to live in it for a long time, then I'd say 'go for it'.

I have twice bought houses because I fell in love with them, mainly because they were a bit 'different', and I haven't regretted the decision. In fact I wouldn't have sold the first but for a relationship break-down, and I am still in the second, which I consider to be my 'forever home'.

Everyone is different, but a house is a home first and foremost.

    Good luck!

  • We bought this house as it was love at first sight - and believe me the first viewing wasn't great; it's ancient, exposed to screaming gales on top of a cliff, far too big for the two of us, was a total shell, the electrics didn't work, drainpipes kept falling off, it's freezing cold in the winter and the upstairs bathroom whilst enormous, is in the eaves which gives the 'mind your head' issues in spades. :)
We adore it - it's our forever home (forever needing something doing to it) :o:D

If you are looking to stay in a place for a long time, then follow your heart. You can modify the interior to sell when the time comes.

If you want to do a place up and sell or rent out, then use your head.

We lived in a house with a lovely view and it was everything we wanted on paper but it had an odd feel about it which we could never work out. It was a rental home but we knew it would be for sale one day. When it came up for sale, we didn't go for it and glad we didn't.

I have lived in places that have made me happy, yet not been the best on paper, nor very expensive or grand.

Another example, you can go to an estate and view the identical looking houses yet they feel different.

Without sounding too new age, the energy a place gives means everything. It is a home and home should feel right and comfortable.

    Update as promised:

well, after all of that hand-wringing by me, it turns out that neither of the vendors would consider our offers ! We offered 90% to both & they both turned us down flat :(

West Sussex is obviously a bit more refractive to the current market conditions than I had thought !

thanks again for all of your views, it was much appreciated

You don't get much garden for half a million, do you?

    Have you viewed this one?

    Or this one

Neither of them seem as packed on the plot as your two do.

nope, it's an expensive part of the world !
Unfortunately neither would be something we would be interested in: the first one is on a busy road in an, erm, less salubrious area of town (although, it is Horsham - no areas are truly that awful)

The second one we actually had a look at, and we had to discount. My DH lived on 2 houses in that road (built all in the same style) through a difficult childhood, and has had so many bad memories from one house a few doors away that he felt that he couldn't cope with living there !

thanks for looking, it was a lovely thing to do :)

Yep, my sis lives just up the Dorking road from you, just into Surrey. The price of houses there makes my heart stop - I'm in a lovely rural area in Staffordshire - her tiny two bed terrace cost more than my four bed detatched bungalow

You could always move North... :A

    Good luck!
