Is there any other computer connected to the router? or do you use only your laptop?
Maybe you're the same as me, we see things they'll never see...

It's just my laptop connected to the router/modem

in that case I'm not sure, sorry. I suspect whatever you do you should still be able to connect to the router as long as you install the driver for the card on your laptop, but I don't want to tell you to uninstall it if it's the only way you can access it. I would still try a different filter tho.

I have Linksys router & adapter and also suffer from the occasional connection problems.

don't know whether its the router or adapter or the walls between!

It may be worth knowing that I have a microfilter fitted.

is there only one phone socket in the house, no extensions anywhere?
  • Microfilters must be fitted to ALL telephone sockets where a phone is connected - including your Sky box if you have one.

If this is already the case, then when logged in to your router through 192.168.1.1, check the timeout setting; if it's non-zero then I suggest setting this to zero (i.e. never timeout) - this cured a similar problem on my SMC router.

Just to add further info: my telephone line is very crackly and 'hissy' if you know what I mean. Also, whem I pick the phone up that sometimes seems to cut the internet connection out.

I think you've answered your question there. That line doesn't sound good for a connection and you should really get in touch with your phone supplier (I hope you have your line rental with BT and not talktalk).

By the way do you run a firewall on your computer??

Before you contact BT, disconnect everything from your phone line, unscrew the front face of your master socket and plug in a phone.
If it's still crackly, it's your supplier's problem.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

Hi all, thanks so much for all the advice! In answer, microfilters are connected to all sockets (there is only one!). I run a firewall. My connection is with BT and not TalkTalk (is that wrong?)

I'll try changing the time out setting on my router when I get a chance. A phone plugged straight in to the phone line isn't crackly or hissy, only when it goes through the microfilter.

    Thanks,

    Ian

Before you do anything go back to your normal internittent connection and then try and disable the Firewire and see if this helps. Worked a treat with my intermittent connestion through Linksys. If this doesn't work then try and change the microfilter as the phone line should remain clear through it unless it is faulty. I would also strongly recommend keeping the Linksys software installed (and the router firmware updated) as opposed to using the generic XP wireless settings. Hope it works.
BTW having your line with BT is very good in the event of a fault with the line as TalkTalk customer service is known to be extremely rubbish.
