Furniture left in repossessed property

  • I think I personally would just clean the furniture with some disinfectant spray or something but bin the bed (or if you can't afford a bed, at least the mattress), it's no worse than hotel furniture or something of that ilk at the end of the day really.
  • You usually find that the contract for the purchase of a repossessed property makes it clear that the selling mortgage lender doe snot own nay items in the property and has no right to transfer them so will still belong to the defaulting borrower/borrower's girlfriend/brother etc.

They might turn up wanting their armchair etc. Mostly they won't because they would have taken whatever they could out of the place before it was repossessed but it is not completely unknown for them to turn up wanting their items, so you have to take the risk if you dispose of anything, that they might show up and make a fuss.

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.

When we purchased our property, this was a repossession.

The place was a right tip, especially after the bailiff came in, As it was my first place, we put the offer in, but asked for everything to be left as it was.

They agreed and everything went through ok, a couple of days cleaning getting rid of rubbish, paper etc, In the end, I had the following items:

    3 seater leather sofa
    2 seater leather sofa
    glass table with chairs
    glass coffee table
    tall standing lamp
    1 king size bed
    1 double bed
    1 set of drawers
    1 large cupboard with drawers
    1 cuboard (old though)

Everything was very stylish, and met what i had in mind to buy anyway.

This saved me thousands of £££ I also found a set of BMW keys, not like it's usefull to me, but i allways keep an eye out for that reg plate now..:rotfl:
  • If it's scrubbable, why not keep it.

    Things I wouldn't keep:

    Beds and mattresses.

I'd be a bit wary of anything upholstered, and carpets.

It's doubly expensive if you have to pay to get stuff taken away, and pay again to get new stuff delivered.

Even worse would be to buy something in a second-hand shop and realise when you got it home it was the thing you had taken away earlier!!!
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
