Right....
I passed my driving test last Tuesday and already have a car waiting at home for me.
The car is registered in my Grandfather's name and all details were registered to him.
Basically, I am looking to obviously now tax and insure the vehicle under my name to take responsibility from him.
The vehicle registration document is registered to him and I am looking to change to my name.
I also have a SORN notice for the vehicle which is under his name. Now I have just called the DVLA, but wanted a second opinion also.
The woman there tells me that I can insure the vehicle naming myself as the owner and then I can just take the filled in registration document (ready to change to my name) along with the SORN notice to the Post Office.
They will then get the registration document sent off to the DVLA for me and print me a new tax disc under my name.
Is this right?
All seems to good to be true.
Sorry for ranting on, but many thanks for any replies I get.

Yes that's right. Effectively you are buying the car from him, and in that situation, if you look at the logbook (V5 document) you will see that there is a large green section that you fill in with the new keepers details (ie. yourself) and send off to the DVLA and a tear-off green section (V5/C I think, "new keeper supplement") that you keep as proof of ownership in the meantime.
The V5/C, MOT and Insurance are all you need to buy tax, and the latter two can be checked online by the post office usually.
Note that I would wait until Friday in order to avoid paying for tax for the entire month of September, but as it's your first car I'd understand if you didn't want to wait.0 -

Thanks for your reply.
So with the V5 document, I can take that in after I've filled it in, along with my insurance documents and MOT documents?
Will I even need to take the SORN with me?0 -

Brilliant.
So just to confirm.
Filled in V5 form, ready for changing over.
Insurance document.
MOT form.
All sorted?0 -
Anyone?
Sorry for being a pain, I just want to get it sorted ASAP.0 -
The V5C tear off stub is technically all you need (plus MOT and insurance) but since you are going to the post office you may as well take the V5 with you anyway.
If you just hand them the filled in form, they will tear off the V5C and return it to you and send the main V5 off to the DVLA.
You do not need the SORN document.
I'd still wait until Friday though.0 -

Also happy motoring! :cool:0 -

So although the car is still registered in my Grandfather's name. I can still set up an insurance policy stating I am the owner, as I intend to change the registration into my name? Is this ok?0 -
