Green waste bins not emptied, council tax rebate?

My council is supposed to empty the green waste wheelie bins every 2 weeks during spring to autumn. They missed 2 collections during the spring, and IF they empty the bins this week it will be 6 weeks since the last collection. My bin is usually full at the end of a 2 week period with hedge trimmings and other waste that isn't easy or practical to compost, so I need it emptying regularly.
I've complained to the council, but they blame the lack of collections on the unions and say I cannot claim a rebate on my council tax.
After asking for a second wheelie bin, I received a reply that I could purchase one for something like £25 to £30. As a pensioner, that is not an option - I need my savings to pay other bills.
Any suggestions on this matter?

Keep on at your council and/or get onto your local councillor, if anything like mine he gets things done0

Is it just your bin or the whole street ? . Our bin men wont take wheelie bins if the handle is not facing the kerb . Our councils web site has a contact email or phone number you can ring if your bins not collected when you contact them they either send someone the same day or next day .0

Whatever issues the council may have with its staff unions is of no concern to you.
If my bin(s) are not emptied on the day they are meant to be then I phone up , there is a dedicated number on their website, and the bin is emptied within two days.
Keep on at them.
(You won't get a rebate mind you)0 -
Sorry, but hedge trimmings are garden waste. My council will not collect them either.0

Some do though Freddie.
We have these new green lidded wheelie bins in which we can put all food waste and all garden waste, but nothing else, these are emptied weekly. Then we have the usual black lidded bin for all non-recycleable waste that goes to land fill emptied every 2 weeks, then we have bags for the recycling collected every 2 weeks.
I'm guessing OP has something similar.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
My council won't collect green waste. I have to either take it to the tip or buy special bags and request a collection. These are less frequent than the normal fortnightly collections (general waste/recyclable waste), perhaps once a month?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Agree with PP. We have a 3 bin system and our brown bin is for garden waste but is only emptied on a 4 weekly cycle.
I assumed the OP's green bin was my brown one IYSWIM?
Our brown is for garden waste, green bin is for landfill waste and our blue one is for plastic, cardboard and paper. We also have a black bucket thats for glass, clothing, batteries and small electrical (cos you wanted to know all that :A :rotfl:)
Our council is really good actually. You can put anything you like in the green one, have it overflowing and face the handle anywhere you please and they still empty it.0 -
We have
- a bin for general waste
- a bin for recycling waste
- a bin for waste food (admittedly not a full size bin but still)
- a smaller version of those bags you get from builders merchants for our green waste (such as grass clippings etc)2014 Target;
To overpay CC by £1,000.
Overpayment to date : £310
2nd Purse Challenge:
£15.88 saved to date0 -
We have:
A black wheelie bin for non-recycable waste
A green wheelie bin for cardboard and green waste
A black box for cans & cartons
A green box for magazines & glass bottles
Black box & bin collected one week, green the next.
With different councils having different schemes it's no wonder people get confused!0 -
Freddie was down in Cornwall recently. I must have passed more than one so called 'Green waste; truck on the M5/A30 corridor.
Wonder where all that nice waste went to?
(My council, under Stan the Man Waddington, wants to inspect our waste using surreptitious methods!)0
