  • It's a resistive screen and low spec - not worth touching with a barge pole - there's several phones with better spec than it has

Wait till they release them with CPU > 1Ghz and multi-touch screens

Yes, I read it's a resistive screen too which means to 'pinch' is almost impossible, requiring you to press to click as you pinch. Although ISTR they claim it to be multitouch. Resistive screens really need a stylus. There's a video on the net somewhere of someone demonstrating how difficult it is. However, there are a number of decent Android (2.1 and up) tablets coming up for launch very soon which should give the iPad a run for its money (and they'll have memory card slots, the omission of which makes iPads and iPods a no-no for me).

What do people reckon to the Apad? (which a fellow poster put a link up for ...thanks :),btw)

    Is 7in / 800*480 resolution enough?

At £130 quid it looks tempting, but has anyone used one of these devices?
  • Apad - 600mhz, resistive screen.. i'd rather have a HTC desire or Samsung Galaxy S, they've got more umph

simply put a £180 tablet is not going to have as much 'finesse' as the iPad but if you are looking for something just to have around the living room to do a little general web surfing, check your email or watch some youtube videos then it will do the job perfectly fine.

what I would say is android 2.x is not really designed for tablets, you won't get flash on 2.1 and you won't get the default google apps (android market (though you can always sideload apps from the computer) or gmail (though you can use the *better* web site for gmail)) on any 2.x device unless it has 3G (like the galaxy tab)

android 3.0 should greatly help the tablet experiance but I would expect android 3.0 tablets to be available around the begining of next year after its release later this year. so could be something to think about whether it is best to wait.

but as I say if you are looking just for the general internet and checking your emails then unless you specifically need or want the ipad these cheep tablets probably won't do you much harm.
but because of the different insides of these tablets a few of them may feel 'slow' when loading web pages (others will feel perfectly fast enough) so if they have a demo unit I would say have a go and see if you are ok with the performance.

the HTC desire and samsung galaxy S are £400+ so where they may have a better capacitive screen and slightly faster CPU you cannot really recommend them as comparative devices at all.

what you can say is a comparitive device is the 8GB iPod Touch at £189 it will surf the web as well (if not better and faster) as these devices (though you cannot have flash support) you can also have all the 'apps' (which you can limit to free ones of which there are lots of very good free games) you can also video call and record HD video, the only negative (and it is a very big one) is that the 3.5 inch screen is small it is good for personal use but you cannot really all sit around it also after prolonged use it may be a bit painful on the eyes.

so if you want an internet surfing device and not fussed about the screen then I would definatly go for the ipod touch if you need or want a big screen then a tablet is the only way to go

As long as you never want to expand the memory, in which case there's a second negative and it (IMO) is an even bigger one.

it depends, I would say most people wouldnt want to put that much music (if any) on a cheap tablet device so the same would be true for the ipod touch (if you were to buy it for 'a more portable tablet' sort of device) esp if you have it as a *home* device where you likely already have something to listen to music and in far better quality than any tablet devices speaker.

plus android 2.1 doesn't support apps2SD so even if you were to put 6GB of music on the ipod you would still have far more room for apps than any on the tablets, if you wanted space for apps. most of the tablets come with only 256MB of free inbuilt memory where you can install apps.

all in all 8GB is more than enough space for an internet/checking email/installing apps and still have enough left over for some music generally 250 songs only take up 1GB so you do have enough space for your best music
