Best ask on the Techie board. You'll get more of a response there.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I'd be interested if it was 3G as well. Not so sure about it with only WIFI to connect to the net. Wasn't that the reason Apple brought out the 2nd Gen ipad?

I saw a mini review on this on a tech blog (cant remember which one now but will try and find a link)

The guy testing it said it was awful. Some stuff was still in Chinese in the menus, it was very slow to respond and sometimes did not respond at all when touching things on screen.

Be wary of any table this cheap, it will not compare with the iPad at all.

Even Samsungs tablet which runs Android (the same operating system as the Next one) is expensive at about £599 so for £180 you aren't going to get much.

Morgan computers are doing one for £85 I expect that is going to be equally as bad as the Next one.

The Guardian reporter is an Apple Fanboy though so I wouldnt take any notice of what he says. PC World themselves are releasing one under the Advent brand in November. I personally would go for this

I saw a comment along the lines of 'it was so bad he didn't bother doing a review'....

I swear I have yet to see a tablet that does anything as well as the iPad does it, by which I'm referring to the UI as well as actual functions.

Then again I think there's really only one other tablet device out yet. Even the Blackberry Playbook doesn't actually exist yet. Has anybody seen anyone actually using one? I've only seen videos of the supposed OS in action, and never actually running on hardware.
  • Fwiw I suspect its the ecosystem that's going to make the next tablet, just like it has done for the Ipad. As without something for them to do or for the users to enjoy, there's not much point is there? You could use a laptop\netbook for surfing on the sofa, ok, you'll have to wait maybe a minute for it to boot up, that's the usual excuse most of the Apple guys give, but even that's not really a point anymore as PCs are getting rid of the BIOS : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11430069 there are lots of retailers, such as you've pointed out NEXT, now there's Dixons.co.uk with their Amico branded tablet: http://www.slashgear.com/advent-vega-10-tegra-2-tablet-and-amico-7-slate-due-november-07106440/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+slashgear+ as you can see it will be running on Android and Tegra2 which is a step up from most.

They all lack anything to do other than surf the internet and perhaps collect email. That is untill you get to the Inknotion Adam which has been 'coming' for the last year: http://www.slashgear.com/notion-ink-adam-could-launch-in-multitude-of-colors-25104282/ which has 'partners' such as EAGames, Comic Writers, as well as a 'new' type of email product, they're also promising a variety of 4 tablets including the Pixel Qi screen which you can use in direct sunlight and it will show you what's onscreen unlike the ipad et al which will do nothing but show you the sunlight directly back at you.

It's also got a eco system behind it not limited to just a few games so to conclude there's more to the tablet than just the tablet and doing things that you would ordinarily do on the laptop, which explains the success of the ipad as people are permitted the luxury of trying out various Apps which will keep them coming back for more.
