Hi Flib, to be honest I haven't really looked into going onto a standard tariff as opposed to E7.
I guess I'm on E7 because, like you, I am not an early riser and I work full time. The theory behind it is that for most of the day I am out of the house so only the fridge/freezer is on. I used to work till about 7pm (ish) and get home about 7.30-8.00pm so I'd have 4-5 hours on the day rate electricity. Then I'd do my washing over night and heat my water (by emersion tank). I used to tumble dry my washing over night too sometimes but I never use the tumble dryer now.
I do believe under certain circumstances E7 can work for people, admittedley I don't think it's quite working for me at the moment but that's my own fault - I should take more advantage of the cheap rate electric.
I would say also that my electric bills since Jan 2008 have worked out to about £336 per year. I have a 2 bed semi in a somewhat exposed location so it does get rather cold at times.
Hope that helps some.
