  • I wash EVERYTHING on 30 degrees and it is all clean when it comes out! Mind you, the clothing etc that goes into the washing machine is never ultra dirty!

I always find if I wash darks on 40 degrees I get white powder residue on the clothes.

Why is that? I intend to go back to washing liquid, but it's not as cheap as powder.

i used to get this now use half the amount of powder and no more white residue.

I wash most things on 40 degrees apart from a weekly teatowel/dishcloth wash at 90. I too was told that washing machines benefit from a very hot wash.

I've started switching down to 30 since those adverts (can't remember if it's ariel or persil...use tesco's own brand anyway) At first I wondered if 30 would be hot enough but when you think about it 40 degress is only barely warm...body temp is 37.5 so 40 must be tepid (is that the right word?)

Does your washing machine have to heat the water itself?

Our water is usually already hot enough from the tank so it doesn't use any extra electricity for a 40 wash compared to a 30 except if the 40 wash is a longer running time.

All our washes are done at 40 and always come out clean. Will check our 30 program to see if it has a shorter running time. If so, I'll give it a go.

As far as I understand it now it is possible to wash at 30 deg as these new powders coming out now are formulated to activate at 30 deg. I have a mucky hubby and dd and wash all our clothes at 30 deg with a mixture of washing powder and soda crystals an everything comes out fine!

  • Thanks to this thread I tried a 30 degree wash today. I put the powder in the drum first (Fairy non-bio), and was amazed there was no powder residue. I read the side of the box (for the first time!) and it says it can be used on washes from 30-95 degrees.

Everything came out clean (i sniffed all the armpits to check!) I've been using vinegar as a softener for a while now, and may try adding soda crystals.

Thanks again, OSers for another great tip!

  • I always do everything at 40 degrees. Cos I can see the number 4 without my glasses.
