  • I have two babies and do most of my washing on 30 degrees. I do bedding on a 60 degree wash sometimes, and anything poo-soiled goes on a hot wash but 30 degrees seems fine for everything else, even food stained stuff.

Put the washing powder in the drum before you add the clothes.

  • One of the big washing powder companies is advertising that their washing powder can be used effectively at 30 degrees, thus saving energy. I wash mostly at 40....has anybody tried 30?
  • We've just moved from 40 to 60 as it happens. We've use non-bio and have been getting mould, so we're hoping washing at 60 clears it. We've also taken the advance about doing a monthly service wash with bio at 90 to clear the pipes of grease ect... Using the cheapest bio we could find of course.

Whats this 30 stuff you've found?

I only ever use non-bio as little one has a touch of eczema. Should I maybe do the monthly wash thing with bio? I haven't noticed mould or anything but the fluff catchment thing does get really gross.

Its entirely up to yourself, have a read of this, maybe it will help you decide.

Washing machine manufacturers now recommend a service wash once a month.

This is particularly important if you mostly use low temperature washes and (or) washing machine detergent without bleach. A service (or maintenance) wash involves putting the washing machine on at 90° (use at least 60°) with only the detergent inside - and no laundry. I particularly recommend you use a washing machine detergent that does containno bleach for a service wash (colour-friendly washing detergent contains bleach). If you normally use a washing machine detergent that doesn't contain bleach, then buy some detergent that does contain bleach and use it for your maintenance wash. This will help kill off bacteria and prevent black mould and grease.

  • I've always tended to wash only at 30 (except bedding which i do at 60)... does washing at 30 mean it's less efeective? It always seems okay to me, although I have to admit I am not too worried about marks etc on my little boys clothes because he's always getting dirty.

I regularly wash at 30, and am happy with the results. I remember hand-washing, for which I certainly didn't ever use water at 60.

And remembering hand washing makes you realise what a wonderful invention the automatic washing machine is!
