Hi.

Is it possible to change/port a mobile number mid contract?.
Im 9mths in on an 18mth orange dolphin contract but my office has moved address and I now get between 1 bar and 'no service' signal, ideal!. Most of the time I can't even send/receive texts.

Nothing to do with Orange I know but what I want to do is give the contact to my wife but keep my own number. Ideally transfer her payg number in and take my number to o2 or giffgaff.

Failing that I guess im going to have to pay 9mths line rental to buy out of it. Anyone know if their monthly buyout charge is inc vat or not?.

Thanks

I think it can be done yes, best thing is to call up orange and explain they should help you out, it may also be a case of being lucky and getting a flexible CS rep and you charming them. it may be that you just get a script reader who just says 'no, no, no' hopefully that won't happen.
  • Vodafone would not let me transfer a number on contract.

I wanted a new phone & keep my existing number and give the old phone to my daughter, Leaving me with 2 phones
on contract. The only way they would let me do it was to buy out the remaining contract.

The number is tied to the contract, I presume it stops you transferring to a P&G number then defaulting on the payments.
Their way you will at least lose the number.

    PITA though.

Looked into it before and it couldn't be done - if you change your number on your contract you loose the old number (i.e. you can't port it out).
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • Can't be done without loosing number.
Is the T-Mobile coverage any better in the office by any chance? Roaming is due to go live 5th October, so you may be able to force roam the whole time.

Hmm not sure about t-mobile but o2 and vodafone are good signals so it might be.
So just to clarify orange are due to be able to use the t-mobile network anytime now?. This could save me some headaches :T

edit* T-mobile coverate is 'very good' accorinding to their coverage map but then orange says its 'Good' too!
  • See if anyone in the office has T-Mobile, or do a manual network search? If it shows up in the list, at least there is some signal.
It won't (most likely) work yet, but should from October 5th. See https://tellus.orange.co.uk/coverage I would register on there and then keep trying a manual roam. I find the T-Mobile street check a little bit more reliable than the Orange one. That's not to say that T-Mobile will work in your office building though.
  • Orange shows "excellent" here for both 2G and 3G. In truth, it's pretty crap and will drop calls. Their 3G signal is mostly not detectable.
T-Mobile shows "very good" 2G and 3G. Their 3G is usable, if I force the phone to stay on it. Otherwise it will spend most the time on 2G. I've yet to drop a call however.

There is an Orange phone in this household so we are waiting for the roaming to come active too.

Hi, how do I force a phone to use a particular service or to manual roam. Its an iphone 3gs btw
  • To change from automatic to manual network selection
    Tap Settings
    Tap Carrier
    Tap on the required network.

Never tried this on an iPhone but I assume it'll list all networks it can see. You may want to try to select T-Mobile UK, but I would not be surprised at this stage if it doesn't work. In that case, register on the Orange link in my post above (post 8) and try again next Tuesday.

If it lists O2 and Vodafone but not T-Mobile then I guess T-Mobile does not have good coverage there.
