Jowo. I think there have been some miscalculations.

    OP works 24 hours a week @ £6.72 / hour = £161.28.

She also receives £120 a week in CTC and WTC.

    And £20 a week CB.

And £10 a week from her sons JSA.

Total monthly income of £1245. (Well, every 4 weeks actually). On this basis, finding the rent and CT each month shouldn't be a problem?

Unless I have misread something, the OP is on an annual income of £16100 (ish).

The Op gets disabled persons premium which she states is already included in figures but does the OP not also get DLA care or mobility, and at what rates?
  • in answer to your reply, i dont get any dla. Wage is paid monthly, not 4 weekly. If I could manage on the income I have, I wouldnt be asking for advice. In answer to the other posts, jobs in this area for my son are non existent at the moment. Thanks jowo and the others for the replies.
  • I also pay tax and NI, like everyone else, and also pay towards an occupational pension, which deducts 120 per month from my pay . My son has recently finished a college course, and had applied for the an advanced course, however this was cancelled due to not enough people registering for it.

Can you cancel your occupatioanl pension?
Your son gets £50 per week and only pays £10 per week food & board? What does he do with the other £40 per week?

  • Although your sons JSA is taken as household income I'd still chase up the H/CT benefit.. If you get disability element of WTC you should also be getting a disabled premium calculated into your housing benefit assessment.
I've had all sorts of problems with H/CT benefit this yr and they still havn't calculated it correctly.

I'm surprised this post hasn't attracted any other advice on how the OP can up their income, decrease their expenses or advice on benefit entitlements?

Any more takers for how the OP can improve her position which currently sees three quarters of the household income spent on council tax and rent?
Honestly Jowo it's a dam hard read, I had to re read it several times and take all the non relevant info out. Like Duncombe I get the same figures.

  • this is my weekly income.... From my pay 140, from tax credit ( working, child and disabled persons tax credit ) 120, Child benefit 20 pounds a week, and ten pounds a week from my eldest son, though to be truthful, hes given me nothing yet as hes just started to sign on.from this, every week 110 goes to rent, 28 and 5 for council tax, thats 28 for this years and 5 towards arrears. Gas and electric payment 40 pounds per week between the two, travel to and from work,30 pounds per week, school dinners 15 pounds a week, 40 pounds a month car insurance, tv license 5 per week. In my calculations that leaves me 17 pounds a week before I have bought any food,m budgeted for birthdays, christmas, haircuts , clothes, shoes or anything else. I cant afford to buy myself clothes, my family gives me there clothes when they no longer wear them. My neice gave me a coat for the winter last year, which i will wear this year too. I dont drink or smoke and dont go out much except to work. Not surprisingly, not having a secure tenure after six years and moving five times in as many years is now having an impact on my health. I am sick of contacting the council now, If i am succesful with a claim for dhp it only lasts for 13 weeks and no guarntee i would get it again, which leaves me and the children back at square one.

three things really stand out with your figures:
    1) your child needs to be giving you more than £10 a week, OR needs to buy his own food etc. the JSA is to LIVE ON not as pocket money - £10 won't cover his share of food/bills/rent. I would suggest that £30 to you & £10 for his own spends is far more reasonable - that's £10 rent, £10 food & £10 bills - way less than he'd spend if he was living alone.
    2) does your gas/electric payment include arrears - it seems mighty high! I pay that much per MONTH ...
    3) school dinners - can your child take a packed lunch? It would be wayyyyyyy cheaper than £15 a week AND you get to control what he eats!

How do you travel to work? car? Is the bus any cheaper? you can get a weekly bus ticket here for £14 unlimited travel all week ...
  • I stay in area where the public transport is not the greatest. I also work shifts which means sometimes i dont finish work till 1130 at night and start at 7 am, I would not be able to get to or back from work using public tansport. I agree when my son does start getting jsa he should be giving me more than ten pounds a week, i could ask my younger child to take a packed lunch to school. He likes to go with his friends at lunch time, Packed lunch would mean sitting in school. Not a big deal to me but it is to a 12 year old who wants to be with his friends. I have considered all these things. I really am at my wits end, i fought for a house for 6 years and i really dont have the energy to fight it anymore. I agree the gas and electric here is high. Yes that does include an amount towards arrears too.

Correct me if Im wrong but I thought that you had to be in receipt of DLA to get disabled part of WTC.
