Gaming laptop?

Hi there thanks for looking.

Basically I'm looking for a top notch gaming laptop having been clunking around with a 5 year old one for some time and now no longer can play the newest games.

I don't really know all that much about computers but I would like it to be windows 7 and obvously needs to have a good graphics card etc.

Would quite like to spend no more than £1000 if possible.

Thanks for any help :)

The Alienware laptops are great for gaming but in your price range you'd be restricted to the M11x (£750) which has a quite small screen (11 inch) however the benefit of that is that it is nice and portable. Some say Alienware laptops are difficult to get fixed if they go wrong because parts are scarce. The Alienware M17x is huge at 17" and is possibly the most the most powerful gaming laptop around - but comes with a hefty price tag. The M15x is also way out of your budget at about £1600.

    For a 15" screen around £1000 the MSI GT460:

Or these look a good deal and can be configured (go for a i7 or i5 processor):

  • A few things I would look for in a laptop:

Best bang for buck will prob be a core i-5. Core i-7 may have a bigger number next to it but don't let it fool you, the only thing you gain is hyper threading and I don't know of any games that can use 8 streams of cpu data...

best GPU available for you will likely be an ati, current pricing for the GPUs are fairly well balanced, more money basically = more performance, that said, i personally wouldn't go for less than a Radeon 5650

As for RAM, you will want 4 gigs DDR3, it will be unlikely that you will get anything but 1333 clock on your RAM tbh, but that's fine.

With that in mind, I found this...

Cracking price for a gaming laptop and very good spec to boot.

the laptop at scan is pretty damned good spec and i doubt you will find anything much better from my quick search's
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • Had the same debate myself, have given up and bought a PS3 as the thing actually designed to do what gaming laptops struggle to do. But did see in PC World yesterday a couple of laptops with i5 processors and 1GB graphics cards at about £800 which looked best value of anything I've seen, HP machines. Good lcuk!
  • Laptop graphics cards are always underpowered and overpriced. If you are looking to spend around a £1000 you could buy both a decent laptop and a seperate desktop gaming PC.

Even a £1000 gaming laptop will struggle with the latest titles and in a year or so will not be up to scratch.

The mobility 5870 of the above laptop is equal to the low/mid range 5770 desktop card, Its not capable of playing the latest games at 1680x1050 at full detail.

After the way my old Pegasus 670 (b. April 2007) has started to struggle with Civ5 and over the weekend frustratingly discovering it's hardware limited to 3GB RAM I'm back in the market for a replacement for my 'gaming while travelling' machine.

Nice spot Russel, I'm seriously considering it if no better options get posted :A

I bought a desktop from pcspecialist and it went faulty.
They flouted the law and I ended up contacting trading standards. I'd advase against using them and not just because of my experience - in my correspondence with them their warranty is against the law ie they refuse to replace faulty parts with new ones - they replace faulty ones with old second hand parts.

Trading standards even advised me to that I could go to small claims court.

    Use at your peril

  • Thanks alot for the advice, I know a desktop would be better however I need the portability of the laptop and would rather just have one computer than two. The scan one looks cracking!

Looked into that one a little deeper, found some more pictures and it certainly seems to come out doing very well in reviews...

minor grumble I have on the SCAN one is only comming with an i5-430M, elsewhere it comes with and i5-640 or i7-720 which seem to benchmark a fair bit higher on comparison sites..... tho I guess thats probably why the SCAN one is £900 rather than £1300....

still very much in favour of getting one. Perhaps 18 months down the line I can pick up a 640 fairly cheaply and self upgrade if I'm particularly bothered.
