Hi all, Good Evening and Welcome.
Well part one of restoring the antique table went better than expected only problem was that there was so much dust from removing the old Victorian paint it has set my asthma off. Lady H said when painted in a grey putty colour (battleship grey :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:) she would like it lightly distressed as in shaby chic style, I said by the time I've finished it will be terrified, not distressed.:rotfl:
Later today she showed me some large mother of pearl shells she bought in the same auction, they are @ 7 1/2 inches high and the inside is carved with a picture of a fisherman and fisher women. They are beautiful enough and well carved. She said they must have been carved by some French fisherman. I said they were to well done not to have been done by an artist. I asked for a magnifying glass and a large Silver antique one was produced. Is it a signature she asked? It looks like a date 1875? No I said as I looked at the copperplate engraving, Unless the artist was called Boulougne, I Interperate it as Boulougne sur mer.
Souvenir of Boulougne.:rotfl::rotfl: Some Victorian brought it back from a day trip to Calais.
Ooh I love it.:) Actually when I Googled it later I found one for sale in the US for a $171 that is a dead ringer for the Fisher women, and a least she has the pair.
I hope the story gives you as big a smile as it did me.
