  • My mum used to peel spuds and put them in a bowl with water in and a spoon of vinegar. She kept them there for a few days and were always fine.
  • Some great idea's there, thanks!
Glad to hear that others are doing this successfully :j
Looks like I'll be doing the weeks spuds tomorrow then, like Jackie.

Pmsl@ Pennys post ... love it :rotfl:

Jackie, I'm also an Archers listener, so that'll be the perfect time for spud peeling :D If you've been doing it all these yrs I can't go wrong.

Suzy, I'll try the bread tip too, thanks.

    Thanks so much everyone xx

luv-my-job I have listened to them since I was a little girl and my children say when ever they hear the tune they think of me.I always do the spuds and veggies every sunday morning followed by cake baking for the week.I am a great radio four listener.Even when I was working and driving around London in the early hours of the morning(I am an ex-taxi driver) I would have the radio on and listen to the early morning farmers programme.I could imagine some farmer out in the wilds somewhere milking his cows, or someone halfway up a mountain it Wales listening in as I did to the fat stock prices, whilst i was driving around central London.I love music, but when I want to get on and do something i.e. cooking ,knitting, crafting ect then the wireless comes on and I am a happy bunny. When I used to be able to do gardening then my little radio would come out to the garden with me.
As a widow living alone now, its often the sound of a human voice that can make all the differance to ones day.No matter what the time of day it is you can always find something of interest to listen to.
T.V. is entertaining but I do find I drop off to sleep far too easily if I'm watching t.v. whereas with the radio I can concentrate on doing something else at the same time.Probably its a generational thing as I grew up without t.v. in the late 1940s-50s and what you didn't have you didn't miss really. My tuppaware container is now full for the week so no more spud peeling for me till next sunday.
  • I never knew they keep so long! Ive only joined today and am learning so much. Peeling veg is on par with ironing, a must but boring job

People who do this, do you ever notice that the potatoes you take out of the water at the end of the week seem a bit bigger than at the start of the week?

CupofChai - they ARE bigger as osmosis occurs when the potatoes are put into water. Molecules move from the water and into the potato, the potato swells up, but thankfully won't burst! - I've just started learning biology GCSE and this is the first thing we've been taught :)

I know, that was my point :D. Just wondered if anyone had noticed it and wondered why their potatoes were growing!

You'd be the perfect person to ask then... are they still doing the potato measuring experiment for GCSE? It had been being taught for at least about ten years last time I looked.

Yes, I've just done it :) I spent last night writing up the experiment having completely forgotten all the science knowledge I ever had......roll on tonight's class!

I've got a potato peeling attachment for my Kenwood Chef. Rinse the worst of the mud off the spuds, cut into roughly equal sized chunks, put in peeler with a cupful of water, switch on. If the skins are particularly thick or dirty then I do have to change the water half way through, otherwise that's it. Rinse again and cook. Best attachment I ever bought for the Chef.

I would think leaving potatoes in water for a week would leech out most of the vitamins, don't you think?
    Val.
