Does anyone do this? We prob have spuds about 3-4 times a week and I'm wondering does anyone do them all at once? Would they stay fresh enough if the water was changed daily or would they go soft & manky?
Thanks
Thanks

Never peel potatoes....they are much nicer cooked and eaten with the skin on....would think that 2 days would be the max time you could keep peeled potatoes in water in fridge.

It would depend on the variety - some go brown, in water, within an hour or so.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Hi there, I have just eaten my own home grown spuds tonight after washing and popping them in water 3 nights ago!! I thought we were going to have them that night but events superceded me and we for what ever reason couldn't eat them, anyway 'jackets on' we polished them off tonight and th3y were fab, but I think if you 'cover' them with water they should be good to go for a couple of evenings without skins, maybe more but I have not tried myself, although completely agree preping spuds 3 /4 nights a week can be tiresome and time consuming .

I grow my own too ... but only 1st & 2nd earlies. These are eaten with skin on but it's the maincrop ones that I buy, (not enough room to grow or store these) I was wondering about. Good point about variety, in terms of how they do once peeled.
Looks like I better stick to peeling daily then

When the children were little, we ate a lot of pasta. I used to joke that this was because it didn;t need peelingI then discovered they were telling people this  who then thought I was really lazy, not that as a family we happened to prefer pasta to potatoes :rotfl:

If I peel potatoes I put them in cold water in the fridge and change water daily - they are ok for about 2-3 days 4 at a push - however my husbands granny gave me a tip in that if you put a slice of bread on the top of the potatoes while they are in the water they will stay white no matter what - dont know the reasoning possibly starch out of the bread???? but it certainly works
If you really want to cheat and get ahead Aunt Bessies frozen mashed potatoes are great (Tesco do their own range too) and are great for a stand-by. They make great tatties for on top of cottage pies etcEvery days a School day!0 -
I have been doing this since I first got married in 1962 and still even though I live alone now I still peel my weeks spuds on a Sunday morning whilst listening to 'The Archers' I hate peeling spuds and think that its at least one job done and out of the way asap.I change the water daily until I have used them all up.In fact I finished the last off tonight with my dinner and will peel a new lot tomorrow. I also have sometimes when cooking mashed spuds always make extra and freeze when cold.I use the ice cream scoop to scoop up a round ball of mash and then roll it around in my hand until completely sperical. One done I then put on an old plastic plate probably around 7-8 balls of mash and open-freeze. brilliant when you are a 'singly' like me as one or two poppedinto a m'wave or along side a chop in my remoska does the job a treat.as long as you change the water they will stay fine. I have even scraped new spuds and put them in cold water in the fridge and they too have been fine when you come to use them.Never yet had to throw any out in 48 years so I must be doing something right.years ago when i was a 'full-time working outside the home Mum ' I found it a doddle as the veggies were always ready to cook and who ever was home first used to put them on a low gas to cook so when i got in they were almost done and just needed turning up a bit .My Dd also does this as she too has not a lot of time when she gets in from work before her family come in wanting 'instant dinner'0

i usually do this but mainly for mash,
once a week peel chop & boil lots of spuds - make into mash then put in seperate portions and freeze, oh love mash so its easier for me during the week,
if were having roast potatoes or jackets i just do them as & when,0 -
I go a step further. I cook all my spuds for the week! We only eat them about 2/3 times dur ing the week so don't use a lot. I cook them all in one go, pop them in the fridge then either microwave, or bash them up a bit and fry 'em up in butter ooooerrrr LOVELY!
Love the idea of freezing mash in spheres... I have never frozen mash and had no idea I couldIts my favourite way of having potatoes so I will definately be doing that, thanks
