Car tax expired

Help!

I've just realised my car tax expired 3 weeks ago!!

I know this is all my fault and I should know better but I just didn't realise. I thought I'd get a reminder like usual but for some reason I didn't and now I'm having a panic attack. :o

I tried to get it sorted at the post office this morning but they said they couldn't help because my old disc had actually expired. And then I tried to ring the DVLNI but they're not open on Saturdays. :(

Can I sort this over the phone or do I need to go somewhere to get it taxed now? I've never forgotten before so not sure what to do. If I could phone the DVLNI first thing on Monday and pay by credit card (backdated of course) that'd be great but if I have to faff about with posting off cheques I'm going to be tax-less for even longer!

Anyone any ideas?

why cant you do it online.

Sorry, Ive just re-read your post and you said yu didnt get a reminder. Are you sure, have you asked everyone else in the family.

Nothing for it but to wait till Monday and keep it off the road,
They may be able to do it over the phone, but not sure.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Lol!! Your initial post made me go searching around their website just to make sure I couldn't do it online! (You can't.)

No, definitely no reminder - just me at home and been at this address for years. Have always had a reminder before so guess I just relied on them - not anymore!! Will have to be more organised in future!

The girl in the post office said that the DVLNI are not obliged to send reminders - they just do it as a courtesy. Apparently she gets loads of folk like me in every week. So don't depend on reminders folks, you might not get one!! :o

Do you have a valid MOT?
Do you have a valid Insurance certifcate with you as named driver?
Do you have V5 in your name

If the answer to those is yes, then the Post office has no right to refuse you a new tax disc starting from September_1st_2010, you must go there on Monday morning and get a new one. If they are refusing I would ask them what law requires them to refuse you a disc to drive legally for the remainder of this month? And report them to DVLA and whatever post office head office there is. And then go to a different post office.

You didn't ask for the new disc to start from 1st October did you? Don't do that unless you want to recieve a £40/£80 fine + an increased VED charge for the missing month (September).

Maybe you didn't ask for any specific date and the silly P.O clerk thought you wanted one from the 1st October (which they can't do).... You need to tell them you want it to start from Sept 1st.

What happened when you tried it online? http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk
If you do it online you will not be road legal until your disc arrives in the post - better from the Post Office.

The alternative (to avoid a fine) is to take it off road and declare SORN with a white lie from 31st August 2010 using form V890 or you could also try doing this online.

Exactly! I taxed a moped few years ago at the tail end of a month back dated to the 1st of the month using just these documents. The reason being it had been off-road for a while un-sorned.

I think you can only tax cars at Main post offices now and like Wig says, there was no reason why you couldnt tax it at a (main) post office, as you would still have to tax it from the beginning of this month.

  • I had all those documents with me and the girl didn't even look at them. She just said that because the disc was expired she couldn't do it. (When I first spoke to her I said I wanted to renew my tax starting from Sept 1st as I'd just noticed it was expired)

I tried the DVLNI website to see if I could do it online but couldn't - will have a look at the site in the link above.

I know it's pointless worrying as there's little I can do about it but I'm just so annoyed with myself. :(

Go to a different post office there is NOTHING (except of course stupid post office staff) to stop you from getting a disc starting from Sept 1st.

Unless the law has changed very recently which I doubt very much.
