Post office charged £2.98 for freepost item

I sent my brother to the Post Office to return an unwanted item from New Look. Today is the last day to send it back and I'm unwell and forgot to do it earlier. They provide a Freepost address to return things - I wanted to send it recorded for extra security. I understood that the postage would be free while the recorded part would be 74p. I told him YOU ARE ONLY TO PAY FOR THE RECORDED PART NOT THE POSTAGE. He comes back saying the lady said he had to pay the full amount - £2.98. I checked on their website to be sure and it doesn't seem to support this. I notice that on the receipt they gave him it doesn't include the Freepost address part just the PO Box number. But he also got a certificate of posting which does have the Freepost part.Regardless the New Look return address is Freepost, they can confirm that if necessary. But why did they do this? I'm so annoyed, has this happened to anyone? and if so what did you do? They're currently closed so I can't call them.

Your brother just made a mistake or didn't argue when they tried to charge him for the postage as well.
I doubt if it is anything more sinister than that.

But he did argue, the lady he was dealing with thought it was fine then another lady interjected and said it didn't matter he had to pay all of it and insisted that she charge him. I didn't expect them to not play by the rules lol
When he came back I went online to see if maybe the rules had changed regarding recorded items, but it doesn't look like they have.Never trust a man to follow instructions!
He's a teenage boy, idk
It's just a bit annoying to think your saving money with a free delivery, then end up paying almost all of it back by returning an item
Surely what they did was wrong? TBH honest I would like my money back, 2 unnecessary ££s is still £2 to me....0 -
It is wrong, they should only charge you the recorded fee the only time this is different is if you choose to send a freepost item via special delivery then they would charge you the full price of the postage.
I would go to the post office and ask for a refund, you should also only have a recorded delivery recipt not both seems like the girl made a mistake and was too lazy to correct it as it can be a pain, error recipts are checked on a regular basis so if she makes lots of mistakes she could get in trouble.0 -
you only need the proof of posting to get money back from the catalouge. so i wouldnt of paid for any postage..Sealed pot challenger # 10

Depends.
It seems that if the freepost service is a returns service then you can NOT just pay the recorded fee, if its a regular freepost letter then you can upgrade for just the recorded fee. But they will label the package with a proof of posting barcode and give you a reciept for it for free (which is all you need anyway).0 -

its a new one on me
The Royal Mail do provide a Mail Order Return service (MOR) which is free to the customer and on which the PO will attach a special barcode and provide proof of posting. Whether New Look participate I don't know - if they provide a freepost address I suspect not. The company normally supplies a preprinted address label for this.
What happened here is probably an error - the second PO lady was confusing recorded delivery (pay the fee only) with Special Delivery (pay the full charge). A complaint to PO customer services will probably get a refund and a bit more - I'd guess a book of 12 stamps.
But a free certificate of posting would have been enough - recorded delivery isn't tracked and often not actually recorded..... Particularly to large organisations0
