Help with 02 Cancellation

I’d appreciate some advice please about my problem with 02.
When I cancelled my contract with them back in June I was told that the quickest way to do so was to convert my contract sim to a pay as you go since it would only then take 6 days instead of the customary 30 (I was out of contract by then so had no obligation to continue with them). I made it clear I wasn’t going to use it since I already had an Orange phone and was told that would be fine. I received the sim and filed it away…
Several months later I find that O2 are still billing me for a monthly contract and when I ring to complain they say it’s because I hadn’t registered the new sim! I state that I made it perfectly clear when I cancelled that I didn’t want a monthly contract with them anymore – and that this had obviously been understood by them because they had sent me a pay as you go sim. I have made no calls and in fact not used the O2 network since cancellation – so I’d like my money back please! She then tells me that if I want to cancel it that I have to give 30 days notice again…. Cue me asking to speak to a supervisor who will now apparently listen to my phone conversation and then call me back…
Is this even legal? If I quite clearly say “I don’t want to be with you anymore” – doesn’t this have merit? How can they disregard my very clear wishes and weasel their way into billing me constantly? I’ve told my bank to recall the last direct debit and cancel it… Any advice would be welcome.
