dont know how to help?

my dad has just been given one weeks notice by his employer. he has only been employed with them for around 6 months.
He is not getting any redundacy due to his short employment. Before this job, he was unemployed for 11 months and was made redundant after 10 years with his previous employer. my mam works on average 17 hours per week, but has a four week rota, so one week out of 4 she works 3 days a week and one week she will work 9 on the trot.
When he was last out of work he got jsa contribution based for 6 months only and they got an insulting 9p per week council tax benefit. my mum only earns a basi wage of £8 per hour working in a library for our local council. They do not have any kids under 18, so no benefits from tax credits i dont think, they have a mortgage, so dont qualifty for HB.
They are both in their 50's if that makes any difference, and my dad takes alot of medication for high blood pressure and other health problems and has a medical exempt certificate to cover his costs.
Im trying to help her sort this out as she is really worried about losing her home. ive told her that wont happen, but she is so frightened.
If anyone can offer advise i wud most appreciate it. ive tried the entitled com webiste, but without knowing exact amounts of monies etc there is not much point to it.

thanks

You have not put any figures to your post so its hard to estimate the benefits.

If your mam earns on average more than £102 a week then dad won't be able to claim income based JSA and it sounds like he does not have enogh NICs to claim contributions based JSA.

However it might be worth a claim for council tax benefit on the low income (though you don't say what she earns).

You don't need to have kids under 18 to apply for working tax credits, and certainly they should be claiming it if your figures are corect £8.00ph x 17 = £136 x 52 = £7,072

  • One of them needs to work at least 30 hours per week to qualify for WTC...
  • Do they have any money coming in from any 18 plus children paying for keep?

So in the last 6 months, your Dad has earned nearly £19k. Has any of that been saved?
