Interesting!!!! We were having some problems with the windows before this happened, eg, if you unlocked the car, sometimes the driver's window would go halfway down then the passenger window stopped working altogether. Apparently, where the ECU is situated is just where water collects underr the windscreen. Spoke to BBA-reman as recommended on here, and they had said they had so many problems with Polos with water-damaged ECUs. I imagine we wouldn't get very far with VW as the car is 9yr old, but I suppose it wouldn't do any harm to send an email to them.

Benham 3160 said I should join a VW forum. I did that, but haven't had much luck. My dh spoke to the ECU doctor and they say they may be able to rebuild it for us. Here's hoping!

Update! ECU doctor were able to repair our ECU!!!!! The car drives no problem, so a massive improvement. However, there is a warning light coming on, and when plugged into a mechanic computer (I'm getting this from my dh, don't really understand it myself!!) it shows an error of G80 open or short plus P1247. A very helpful guy on a VW forum says it means (and I quote)
00542 Needle lift sender -G80 Open circuit/short to positive

    - G81 defective
    - Wiring open circuit or short to positive

    Check needle lift sensor.

Can anyone give me an idea what this means? Is it something we can fix ourselves? If not, is it an expensive job?
BTW we put a new battery in as recommended, but the warning light is still not coming on.
Any help, will as always be greatly appreciated.

  • 00542 Needle lift sender....IRC is inside Injector number 3 I believe it sends timing info to the ECU.... Check the wiring out of the top of it isnt broken or chaffed.. The wiring goes directly to the ECU... If its fubar'd maybe cheaper getting another number 3 injector.

And from what you've posted above G81 is related to the fuel temps...

Now I'm asking for your help again. A friend of my dh gave us the error code when he plugged the diagnostics computer in to the car. We have tried local garages to see if anyone will repair the fault, but every one of them wants to re-diagnose the problem and will charge around £50 to tell us what we already know. Is there any way around this? Should it be an easy problem to fix? My Dh has tried, but the warning light is still on.
It looks as if we may need to replace the #3 cylinder injector with needle lift sender (G80). VW are quoting us £250 just for the part.

  • If youre telling them the fault codes whats it to them to just do the repair you've asked for?...

I'm guessing as it's a Polo its the 90bhp TDI... IZ engine code?..

Probably because if they just fit a £250 part and it doesn’t cure the problem then they get a grumbly customer saying they should have checked first.

The other thing is the diagnostics point you in the right direction. The the fitter should check wiring (both ends) and finally check the actual signal coming out of the sensor to confirm failure.

Its already chucked the codes out at being a Duff No3 injector... You can go a bit further along the line of Diagnosis yourself...

Disconnect No3 injector wiring and check the resistance between the two contacts with a multimeter.

If you find an open circuit the sensor coil is dead and will have to be replaced..it's part of the No3 injector so you'd need a replacement injector.

If you find a low resistance, the sensor is good so the problem must lie somewhere in the loom.

Theres a couple of IZ No3 Injector on ebay from an Audi80 but not knowing your engine code I dont know if its of any use to you.

I'm bumping this thread as we have another problem with the Polo. An engine management light has come on again. We had the ECU fixed by the ECU Doctor in October and it was working fine. The car hasn't been on the road since then as we are trying to sell it. When we had the previous problem, the car wouldn't start or drive. Now the car will drive ok, but we can't sell it with this light on. A mechanic reset it, and it went off. Then it came back on again within 10 minutes.
My question after all that is..... is it likely to be the ECU again? Or something else? Has anyone got any ideas please?
