tesco travel money took payment twice

Sorry for the long post but please read

I bought some travel money over the counter from tesco travel money

which came to the vaule of 816.55 but they took the payment twice from my account making me go over my overdrat limit and made me unable to buy anything from that account and my over cheque payment for my mortgage bounced. and for friday I was unable to buy fuel in order to go to work using this account

Alliance and Leicester say its not a banking error on their part and the fault clearly if with the merchent and are sending a letter to that effect

have rung tesco but they say its not their fault as all adds up their end  and given me the details for tavelx who do their travel money.

As it tesco branded Im not happy that they are not willing to take up my case.

the Tesco policy on overchage is refund twice the difference so IMO they should do this

can I have people thoughts on how to move farward and how will this error efect my credit report I have never been over my limit or bounced a any payment so really unhappy its runined my record for somthing out of my control

Look for pre-authorisation in the forums. Probably what they did is sent a pre-authorisation, and then completed the transaction again. Hopefully you didn't enter your pin twice, and the terminal did print only one customer slip that you have now?

Tesco probably don't consider a pre-authorisation a "real" transaction, so they won't see it. That "block" would fall off in a few days (depending on the bank, often 48-72 hours). You could argue to the bank (I would always stress, politely) that you only made a purchase once. If you complain officially (and in writing), enumerating the problems this has caused, and reiterating that you only authorised a single payment, chances are you can get back your charges and maybe even something small on top of that.

That is, if this would be a reasonable bank... With Santander it could take a loooong time.

This pre-authorisation is one reason why credit cards with a surplus limit are better, but that's not an option for cash transaction. For a few hundred pounds, it could be better to avoid things like that (and explicit "foreign cash purchase" surcharges) to simply withdraw the money in ATM or over the counter, so they don't have a chance to mix up your current account. Again, it gets inconvenient over a thousand or so though.

  • I only did one trasaction and only entered my pin once

both transactions had the same reference number thats why a+l were in the end able to remove the block and make the funds available to my account again

I used a debit card in order to make thing easier and avoid getting charges for cash advance ect It has ended up costing me more

I did not take cash as could not of withdrawn that amound out of the atm in one day

This happened to me when booking flights earlier this year. The first transaction didn't go through because a&l thought it was a fraudulent transaction, so when I tried again and it went through, thought nothing more of it until I went to get some money out and the ATM wouldn't let me. Checked online banking and the authorised payment had come out, and a hold had been put on funds from the failed transaction. After getting shoved between a&l and Delta, I got fed up and had a go at a&l who put the money back, and I got them to refund my bounced dd charge and overlimit charge

That probably doesn't help a bit. Merchants, if they know their way around, can free this "hold" on pre-authorised transactions, but it's not easy, it often needs faxing the bank a request.

It's really the best to keep pestering the bank about it, as it's not something you authorised, or expected to happen.

Santander's T&Cs show the following - note, it doesn't say that if using my card, the "merchant is supposed to put a hold, then withdraw the whole amount the second time". Just state your goals - you need the correct transaction completed, and all charges, fees and holds that were the result of an incorrect execution refunded/released, and that they consider your time and inconvenience. You're almost there ;)

There are lots of examples of A&L double charging customers on this forum, are you sure Tescos is the one at fault? I would start a complaint against the bank because that will encourage them to move quicker on getting the evidence anyway, I do suspect it'll be Santander in the long distant end.
Santander are awful - mission in life is to warn people since 17-Sep-10, 18-Sep-10 realised one of thousands.
  • im still in 100% sure who is at fault but all I can go on is whats presented to me

will take the post a copy of the letter to tesco then see what their responce is

Get on the phone to A&L and get them to credit the money to your account. I had to cause a fuss to get them to sort it, and get them to refund the charges as it's not your fault. Don't take no for an answer!
