Using Card for protection

I bought three items from a company to build a PC.
A Motherboard, a Processor and RAM.
The RAM(memory) is not compatable with the other two parts.
The company will not replace them.
The total cost of the components was £361 and I paid by MasterCard.
How do I go about using MasterCard to get my money back ?

Assuming you purchased these as seperate items I don't see how it's the retailers's fault that you've purchased incompatable RAM. You're the one that has made a mistake by not checking the correct specification of the items purchased, again assuming they were not as described when sold. With that in mind the retailer and card company (I'm not sure you get any protection anyway with Mastercard but I may be wrong) have no legal obligation to you for a refund.

    You don't.

The ability to claim money back from a credit card is there to help where are there issues with the goods (i.e. faulty, non delivery etc) NOT when you order the wrong items...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

  • Was it from a shop or on-line? If on-line Uk sourced or aboard?

If its from a shop then you have no rights to a refund and the card people wont do anything.

If its online then DSR applies and you can reject the goods within seven days of receiving the item and they cant charge you a restocking fee or refuse good that have opened, unless they've been unsellable.
  • It was an online company called Overclockers.
The Motherboard stated it used DDR3 ram.
Nowhere did it say it needed a specific DDR3.
I have built PC's for years and have never come across this before.
It turns out that the Ram I bought is tested for Intel boards and I bought an AMD Board.

Again, not the retailer's fault because you didn't do your research.

As the Mankysteve mentioned you may be able to return them for a full refund under the Distance Selling Regs (DSRs) but you only have 7 working days after receipt of the items to contact to inform seller you are doing so. You may also have to pay the return postage.

    From the MB description:
"Memory: 4x DDR3 DIMM 1800(OC) / 1666 / 1333 / 1066 MHz (Max. 16GB) / Dual Channel" - so looks like it doesn't list 1600MHz RAM in that. Although why it wouldn't be compatible with it is anyones guess..
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler

I agree, I've never seen this in all my years of building PC's.
In normal RAM it would just drop its speed.
The fact that they wont exchance the Ram loses them a customer.
  • Send the RAM back under DSR, unless it is too late.
