What stage of the pudding making were you at? Was it ready to be steamed or just part of the preparation that involved steeping the fruit for a few days? I am a bit confused about how you aren't sure what is in the container, do you have the recipe you followed?0

If it smells ok and there is no mould growth I would go ahead. it has a good long cooking time, as the op said, lots of sugar and alcohol, both good preservatives. I'm normally really cautious btw!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I will be making my christmas pudding this weekend. The recipe calls for 2oz treacle but I don't want to buy a tin and only use 2oz as I never bake anything with treacle in it.
Can I use an alternative? Would golden syrup work? I am not too fussed at having a really rich dark pudding.0 -
Hi
I always use golden syrup in mine - no complaints yet
Am starting on mine tomorrow....

Hi thunderchild,
Golden syrup can be used as a substitute but I do prefer treacle as it helps to give the pud the rich dark colour. If you are concerned about the treacle not being used up, it will keep for ages and will be fine to use for next year's pudding and probably the one after that.
Otherwise this thread may give you ideas:
Two tins black treacle
I'll add this to the Christmas pudding questions thread once you've had some more replies as your question may help others.

The treacle gives it a more toffee flavour but there is no reason why you couldn't use a darker sugar e.g soft brown sugar or muscavado to give the same flavour. I'm sure it will taste great whatever you use well done for making your own and being organised enough to start it now. I'm not that organised....:o0

Thanks Pink. I think I will go with golden syrup as we always have that in!0
