Second hand books

Options
Does anyone know any good sites for buying used text books? I came across this one: http://www.sellstudentbooks.com/ which had I book I want for £5 instead of £13 but when I went to check out a security warning popped up so I'm reluctant to use it.

Any recommendations would be great

  • You could try abebooks.co.uk - I've used them many times and always been happy.

amazon, green metro? what book is it, pm me and ill see if i can find it cheaper-im pretty good at it
  • I was wondering this too. The thing with amazon is if you get 2nd hand books off there the P&P is pretty high and it often works out cheaper to get the new books with free P&P.

  • I was going to say:

    www.abebooks.com
    www.amazon.co.uk
    www.greenmetropolis.com

What subject is it? I have a fair few old textbooks lying around myself....
  • It's a teaching degree specialising in early years. The book I was after is this one:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mathematics-Nursery-Education-Ann-Montague-Smith/dp/1853468665

It's no biggie if I can't find it cheap I'll just use the library. It's the only one of 4 key books for Maths that's not available as an online version and I need this quite often through the year.

  • i don't know that site, but it's recommended in an article in the independent here:

    http://www.independent.co.uk/student/student-life/finances/the-student-guide-to-saving-cash-807962.html

it's mentioned on a few other pages. the independent article helps me think it's likely to be legit though (but i'd look on ebay and other places first and use them in preference if there isn't much difference in price!)

  • PlayTrade or Amazon Marketplace would be my suggestion. You can quite often find wholesalers selling new books which are considerably undercutting the main website in those sections. I'd go with Play personally because the P&P is included in the price you pay for the book, and you can get cashback.

  • I bought second hand books from amazon and ebay. I think the majority of students would resell their books on ebay because there are lower fees involved.
  • ebay is fantastic for second hand books! i got 7 of my core law text books for under £50. I have so far received three and they look barely used. had to laugh though one of them sent an email to me saying p&P costs included packing materials, postage and their bus fare to post the book. clearly a skint student
  • ebay has saved my bank balance many a time. that or try charity shops. maybe a long shot for specialist books but some of my books from this year i thought i'd have to buy new ive been able to get in a charity shop.
