(on the other hand, fell is probably more appropriate!)0 -
All sorted now - garage mechanic (small outfit), offered to replace with new alternator for £82 all in, so decided to go with that. Couldn't get repaired - looked at by auto electrician - and second hand might not be found the same afternoon.
Thanks for all the help - made it easier to get car repaired having a rough idea of the problem.0 -
Thanks for the update.
It's always nice when there's and end to a problem.

hello...! 4-5 days back my wife had the same, ditto problem (as the 1st initial post) with her Citroen Saxo 1998 Diesel. She was driving, stereo on, wipers on, head lights on and suddenly the all the electricals just died and the car totally stopped. it wudnt start again & the "low battery indicator was on" . it had to be towed to our place. Now since the battery was just 1 yr old, yesterday we managed to have it replaced with a new one..but still the "battery low indicator" wont switch off. fuses seem fine...i did check them...
we havent driven the car since then in case it stops on the main highway but i dont know what we may do ? do you guys thinks its the alternator again ? pls advice....0 -
how do i check if the belt is worn out, what traces do i look for, though it dont look worn out to me ?0

Easiest way to check if the alternator has gone,is to get the car fired up,and use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the battery terminals.
If when you fire it up,it stays at about 13 volts, then it should be ok.If however, you notice a constant dropping in voltage when the engine is running, then you have found the problem.

Ken.
Breakdown guy took reading at battery terminals and said showing 13, but should be nearer 14, so weak battery! I told him it's only 1 year old.
Mechanic had checks done by auto elecrician - said definitely alternator!
If battery warning light coming on, as it was, he said it's always the
alternator!
Very difficult to know what the problem is with all these conflicting views - however, at the moment, daughter says car is now fine with the new alternator we had put in, so fingers crossed!0 -
If a battery isn't charging when the engine is running, then it's nearly always the alternator.
If the battery is losing charge when the engine is switched off, then the battery is cattle trucked.
