Daughter drove about 60 miles, said red battery warning light going off and on. Parked, and car stalled, then wouldn't start again.
Restarted with jump leads, but stopped again when switched off and tried to restart.
Jump started again and drove back o.k. but can't understand what's happened.
As this has happened before, got new battery, so shouldn't be that.
Not driving car around much, but shouldn't be doing this with new battery?
She didn't have back window heater on, which we think she did have on by mistake once!
Please help - it's a mystery and she's not confident taking car anywhere now!

Any advice much appreciated.
TIA

  • Things to check.

Alternator drive belt. Replace if worn.

Alternator voltage output. An auto electrician will do it for you. Or kwikfit if you must.

You might need the voltage regulator replaced or maybe new carbon brushes. A refurbished Alternator shouldn't be to expensive.
    I have a cunning plan!

Definitely sounds like the alternator, and an alternator on an AX is sooooo easy to replace.

I replaced one on my AX race car earlier on this year.

    Took about 10 minutes.

Will it do any damage if she is still using the car at the moment - don't want it suddenly stopping while she's racing down the motorway!

    Thanks for the advice guys!

Well the alternator is responsible for charging the battery ;)

Usual suspects: battery condition, alternator (aka alternatator as I call it), sometimes the earth straps corrode and fall off.
    Happy chappy

Yes, but will it be a sudden loss of power, which would be dangerous at 70 m.p.h.?

Most likely to be the altenator and/or its drive belt. You should get it change asap as you could loss power and can be very dangerous on motorways.

Quinny said its pretty easy to fix. So buy a second hand alternator and try to fix it yourself or ask a handy friend. I changed the alternator on my nissan micra last year, it took about 30mins, cost £38 second hand (£170 new ouch!)

YOu can get reconditioned ones at Halfords if you take your old one in.

Or alternatively, find an electrical motor reconditioner.

    They're usually cheaper than Halfrauds.
