I should add that we actually did go to Porto Santo in April this year and it was very hot compared to Madeira at a similar time. It is a stunning beach though and if your fit parents are up for walking and sightseeing, splitting a holiday between Porto Santo and Madeira (my fave walking destination) would be a great idea.

    Hi Jewel,
Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura I cannot comment on yet, as I haven't been yet. Other Canarian Islands are not that warm so I only picked these two.

The Canary Islands all have a pretty similar climate, you can't really say that Tenerife and Lanzarote are much different to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

Some of the Cape Verde Islands have big white sand beaches and are a bit warmer than Madeira/Porto Santo and the Canaries. But would probably be more than £750 over New Year.

If you settle for warm rather than hot probably the Canaries is the best option. Fuerteventura has the best beaches, but not a lot else. Papagayo (Lanzarote) and Maspalomas (Gran Canaria) are also very good beaches, but to swim in January I'd be looking for a heated pool.

    NO? I did.
I was going by actual temperatures over the past few years registered on www.wunderground.com

From what you said there should be no different temperature between Manchester and Oldham, but believe you me there is difference of at least 2C. In Saddleworth the difference is 3C+.

I only said facts about my research. If I am going to get sun and swim in winter on a budget, I am going to narrow it down as much as possible to get as good weather as possible.

The weather in Lanz and Fue can be much cooler than Tenerife and Gran Canaria, due to the winds that you get on Lanz and Fue, also being that little further north

You would be suprised on how much difference there can actually be

Don't think the OP would be interested in any of those destinations.

We're off to tenerife for Christmas this year, the temps will be just nice, and where we're staying is close to Playa de Fanabe which is a white sane beach - imported from the Sahara no less, according to the t'internet.

Never been to any of the Canaries before, have been to Malaga for Christmas and the weather was great, went to Orlando last year and the weather was cooler than it had been for 40 years, so you do have to be aware that it's not always going to tie in with the average, though in all likelihood it will.

Better to go to the Canaries and get a lot for your budget than scrimp and save to get to Antigua and have no money left to spend when you get there.;)

btw we booked with Hays travel, checked prices online then phoned up and haggled them down by £150.:D

we are staying at the Hotel Isabel, really liked the look of it, not too expensive and a heated pool in winter.
