vodafone sim in any other phone?

I'm asking for my son who has an extremely dodgy phone on its last legs and is looking for an urgent replacement.

He is on a vodafone contract so needs a phone that will take a vodafone sim, but he is quite picky and wants a sony ericcson, preferably one he can get from a shop today . I know that PAYG phones from Carphonewarehouse phones tend to be unlocked, but are any others, and do any other networks accept a vodafone sim? He prefers a traditional style phone, not a slide, but frankly if he is that desperate he will have to get what he can.

I don't usually post a question and run, but i have to go to work so he can check this thread later without logging in.

Thank you for your help

CPW phones do tend to be unlocked, but you can't be 100% sure. If there's any branding on the phone the odds are its not going to be unlocked.

The only way to be 100% sure is to either buy it on Voda or buy a sim free which will work on any network, the best prices for those tend to be P4U of all place's !

If you want it from a shop, pop into a CPW and check it's unlocked before buying. The staff will check whenever I've bought. Jon's right, if it's branded it's most likely locked.
  • Probably not much use to you (!), but the phones Asda sell for their own sim are unlocked.

Thank you for the suggestions, I think DS is going to go out tomorrow and try CPW especially if he can actually check the phone is unlocked.

  • P4u can also tell you, as branded and sim free hardware comes in on different product codes
