Wish I understood mobiles!!!

I just have a cheap PAYG Tesco mobile, only using £5 monthly...ish.

Now, whilst I cannot see me increasing usage much, I am attracted to a better phone, with maps, apps etc., like the Nokia 5230 on offer at e2save. What I don't understand is....

• Can I just put my tesco sim into the cheapest offer phone, which is on Vodaphone...beleive their phones are often unlocked?
• If I use maps, apps etc, what are the charges. I do not understand the WAPs and MMSs of this world?
• Can I use the satnav on the phone for free, or is it going to cost.
• What makes an app affect the charges.....

etc.

See my problem? Trying to get modern, but don't want to ask the kids!

If its a branded Voda handset, you can't be sure it won't be locked to them.

Some sat nav software (like google) download the maps as you go, you'd need a data bundle adding to your acc or you could blow all your credit in one trip.
Google sat nav is free to use (apart from the downloading of the data) but not necessary the best. You can buy sat nav software and it's then free to use it and it uses no data as all the maps are installed on the phone.

Any app that need to go and get information will use data and therefore charge you.
