The sciences are a lot harder to complete, which is why I said that to say that it IMO is not as complex as some of the harder courses.0

It happened to me as well, but you can bet that I didn't sit around waiting for my parents to fix it. I was on the phone to the relevant people the moment I heard.0

These days a lot of people go to uni who are frankly not up to it academically. Failing first year exams is a sign he will struggle later and is unlikely to get a good degree result, which is crucial in todays graduate job market. He will, however, have the same level of debt as those who did much better.
Unless there is a clear undeniable reason for failing first year exams (serious illness, death of a close realative etc), it would be better to take this as a sign that it is better to quit the course and look for a non-graduate career path.
The comments on this thread regarding the student's 'reasons' for failure remind me somewhat of my flatmate who re-took and failed the first year of his course three times whilst racking up a huge debt and all the while telling his parents he was doing well. They only found out when there was no degree ceremeony at the end of three years.0 -

Good luck, mttylad - to you and your son. He's not the first, and won't be the last, to lose his way a bit. I'm sure that with your support things will work out OK.[0 -
