British workers

An executive of a scandinavian ferry company says most British job applicants he sees are unemployable because they are 'fat and covered with tattoos.'

Putting aside his hyperbole, is there any truth in the general gist of what he is saying?

Has the British propensity to being the larda***s of Europe meant that our workers are at a competitive disadvantage in this global labour market. The same shipping line is employing highly skilled Filipino seamen for a fraction of the cost. The Filipinos are increasingly becoming the workhorses of the global shipping industry.

And - on a day when a 22 year old girl is crying foul because a Job Centre worker suggested her 20+ bodypiercings meant it would be hard for her to find a job (well, duhhhh!) - is our fondness for decorating our obesity with body ink, further consigning us to the labour scrapheap?

Two hundred words, on my desk, by the end of the day please.

  • of course it has an element of truth. why do you think there are so many eastern european waitresses or cleaners? because the fat uneducated tattooed chav of Britain feel these jobs are beneath them. Unless they are in a nice office earning 35k a week despite having no education, qualifications or skills, they refuse to work. sitting on their lardars*s claiming benefits whilst watching jeremy kyle.

anyone remember the last time they had a british waiter or waitress? me neither.

things need to be sorted out.

It really depends how fat, if they're so fat they'll sink the boat then I can understand not wanting to employ them, but a couple of stone shouldn't be an issue, as long as they are hard workers.

It is stupid to have tattoos somewhere visible when you're fully dressed though, if you're not a footballer don't expect to get away with it.

Is part of the issue though not that these sort of jobs are considered to be the pinnacle of achievement for some foreigners, hence the best foreigners apply for them, whereas it tends to be the dregs of the British workforce that apply for them?
  • It just goes to show fat people with tattoos want to work & its the skinny clear skinned ones you should be giving a hard time to

Heard them debating this on Radio 2 the other day. Some women was saying she wouldn't employ anyone with a tattoo and that people covered in tattoos were likely to have fat girlfriends.

    That made me laugh.

I'm sorry carolt. I must have missed the notice that named you as the arbiter of all things that can be discussed here.

I'll run my posts by you for advance approval before I post in future.

I happen to think it's a really interesting comment. If that is a common perception of the standard British worker overseas, it relates directly to issues like FDI, competitiveness, productivity and employment trends.

Me? I'd hire a lithe Filipina over a Tattoo'd BNPer anyday. You know it makes sense.

That's 'cos cakes and ink cost money.

There was a lovely comment in the press following up on this today. Some official from the RMT - not Bob Crow this time - said the comment was scandalous and that we should boycott said ferry line.

Well, he would, wouldn't he, given the average girth of the people who work on the London Underground. No wonder the system keeps failing. It collapses under the collective weight of its workforce.

So now you're saying all fat people are BNP supporters.

You really do have something against overweight individuals don't you?

I guess you're insecure and need to make generisations about others to feel better about yourself.

PS. my BMI close to 25, before you try to pick a fight with me too.
