decided it is best left to Heinz.
Why try to compete with perfection!
Ps only a few weeks ago , we were all worried our toms would not turn red.. now we have a glut.
Such is gardening.0 -
I halve or quarter the ripe tomatoes, weigh up to about 1lb then put into freezer bags. I have about 12 of these already frozen to add to those wonderful winter stews, bologneses etc.
I have been doing this for years and it works very well.0 -

I think the problem is that Heinz puts loads of sugar in it's ketchup, so we get used to that taste and even though I'm sure HM stuff is really nicer, we aren't used to it.
I just boil my toms up, wizz in processor and freeze. HM passata.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
I made tomato juice. It's easier to make than ketchup. And better thing is if you want later you can make spaghetti sauce, even a ketchup.0

Folks - thank you so much for your replies. I agree that Heinz do a good job but I like to know what goes into my food whenever possible and home made does usually taste better than processed so if anyone out there has a recipe for ketchup I would be most grateful.0

I used this recipe recently.

Didn't include red peppers and much less black peppercorns & cloves - suggest you add 'spice mix' some then some more. Think I put more sugar too, but the recipe is adjustable. Before seiving I zapped the mixture with a hand blender to make it easier.
Forgot to say, it's lovely! (And very little to no salt in our ketchup.)0 -
thankyou i was also looking for a recipe as i agree my girls love ketchup but i am not happy with the sugar content so would be happier with a homemade alternativeI am a stay at home mum with a passion for life and all things crafty:xmastree::santa2::xmastree:0
