New Brake pads & discs - Now Brakes feel unresponsive

Hi there

Had my MOT & Service yesterday and had to get new pads & discs.

When I collected the car I was expecting the brakes to feel mega responsive as they had been 'improved/fixed' but it was quite the opposite; I have to put a lot more force on the brake pedal to bring the car to a stop.

I have just rang the garage and the guy said that sometimes it takes a little while for the pad & disc to 'bed together' and for me to see how I go on over the next few days, but If I am not happy, they will take the car back and check on it.

Does this sound normal, this 'bedding in time' or am I being fobbed off?

  • Yes, it's perfectly normal.

DO NOT brake hard on the pads for the next few hundred miles, they should gradually start feeling better.

This is why I don't change discs until they're completely "cattle-trucked".

    Regards,
    Andy
  • Thanks for that. I just need to remember to allow for the new responsiveness and leave plenty of stopping distance in the meantime :)

Firstly were they really needed? I hope you didn't go to one of the tyre/exhaust chains.

Brakes have to be bedded in, they won't be effective until the pads have imparted a thin layer of brake material onto the new discs, THIS is what creates the friction.

Bdenham (sp) gave you the correct advice. They feel worse before they feel better, all down to the disc and pads mateing together. As said give a little more time and space for a 100 miles, but if you need to plant it, hit the pedal harder ;), it will stop.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Saying that though, if you went for the budget option they will feel rubbish. I once bought some Halfords "own brand" brake pads for my Capri - £5 with their trade discount card. Stuck them in. A week later (300 miles) they were taken out and thrown away.

Fitted them on several occasions, they're actually Ferodo's underneath........ All E90 pads should feel relatively good, this is a just a new disc/pad combo and is feeling a bit "glassy".

I'd love to be as melodramatic about automotive matters are you are!
