Free easy backup program?

Im looking for an easy to use backup program for my PC.

It has to be Win 7 compatible, I want to use it so I can back up my docs, music and pictures from my 1st hard drive to my 2nd hard drive.

It would be handy if it just synchronised as well. Ive tried to use windows backup but all I get is a backup of unrecognisable files and nero 7 is just the same.

Can anyone recommend a free program that will do it?

I back up my mp3 collection over three drives with filesync on XP (not sure if it works on win7), shareware but can live with brief nag screen

Yeah, windows backup is just fine IMO. I always back up to a different HD/partition though

Not so familiar with Win7 backup, but found the microsoft XP backup software a bit of a sledgehammer for file/folder backups and being a bit picky about saving between FAT and NTFS formatted drives, maybe the Win7 version has improved

Thought I would relook at Windows XP backup, maybe I'm using it incorrectly but I backed up a folder and ended up with a .bkf file which is not what I would imagine the OP wants if like me using my external hard drive to play music from, I'm sure the .bkf file is a backup but it's not immediately accessable - is Win7 backup different?

The OP talks about synchronising files, implying that 'normal access' is wanted to the files on the second disk. Hence my suggestion of SyncBack (other fine synchronising programs are available!).

Windows XP backup backs up everything to a single .BKF file, from which you can resore individual files, but only via the Windows backup program. Windows 7 is probably much the same, although I haven't actually checked the file format recently...

    +1 for Syncback.

Can be set up with many different modes.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Thanks for clearing this up, thought I might have been using a piece of software when the function was already available in Windoze
  • I tried syncback in the past, I found it a bit difficult to use. However if there is nothing else out there its better than nothing I suppose. Anyone with other suggestions?
