I've ruined my new laptop :(

I spilt glasses cleaner on the keyboard and I think it's soaked through the stero holes too which are located above the fan. To begin with some keys worked and now none are.

Any ideas of whether this can be repaired, it's not covered with accidental damage insurance and I've only had it two weeks!

  • I'd suggest don't turn it on, take the battery out, leave it in an airing cupboard for 2 - 3 days and see if this dries it out.
  • If the keyboard doesn't work, it may be cheaper to buy a usb keyboard I think?
But I hope the keyboard works with drying.

Whatever happens, don`t [STRIKE]throw[/STRIKE] drop it down any stairs, because thats covered and the water damage never gets a look in :P
  • I am not sure. Are you saying that the keyboard keys are not working or the machine itself.
If it is the previous, just buy a keyboard and plug it to a usb jack.

If the machine is wrecked I suggest you do something less accidental to get your money back.

Rather than 'accidentally' damaging it any further than you have already, spend some money asking a laptop repairer to clean the keyboard and/or insides. (I think manufacturers and insurers are wise to the 'hardware damage associated with keyboard liquid damage' scenario, and regard this as fraud...)

1st thing to do is take out battery to prevent further damage, keep it switched off. Then use gentle heat to dry it off - so an airing cupboard or next to a radiator ( not on top of a radiator or a using a hairdryer, that's too hot) and try it again after about 3 days.

If that fails put it into your local pc repair guy and ask them to clean it - though glasses cleaner shouldn't leave much residue, so you might get lucky if you've not already wrecked it by trying to use it 'wet'.

  • Most probably it can be repaired but the real question is for how much depending on the damage. Go to repair shop and let them tkae a look at it.

    great advice you muppet

to the OP.if it were my laptop i would be stripping it down and getting the keyboard out
they are generally easy to remove(post up the make/model) andb then inspecting any obvious damage/letting it all dry out for a few days

  • chirpchirp, a replacement keyboard is cheap[ish], the fitting of same is cheap[ish] depending on model. I've even scrubbed them in the sink and dried them overnight on a radiator. The real problem is if the fluid has gone inside the machine. The second problem is anyone [ even a techie ] who helps you will invalidate your warranty. The third problem is if the liquid viscosity is capable of stopping the keys it may be capable of stopping the fan.

NOTE - cheapish means relevant to the fact that its a brand new machine

Take the battery & cover off also other covers off, leave the lid open and stick it where it can get warmth & dry airflow for 12 / 24 hours, reassemble and report back. It sounds like you are almost certainly going to have to have at least your keyboard removed / replaced.
