Need cable to connect laptop to phoneline

DD has just moved into student halls. The internet they provide is ask4.com wired. It looks like a phone connection. They provide a short wire for £4 which is no where near long enough for her needs, ie approx 1 metre long, and she wants to be able to watch tv, ie iplayer, on her laptop in bed.

I am trying to source a longer cable but am struggling. Her laptop needs an ethernet connection emachines D620 and the wire needs to plus into the phoneline (I think), it says fibre optic broadband.

DS thinks she may need a cable rj11 to rj45 but not sure if this would work.

Can anyone suggest where I can source such a cable, preferably in a shop as I dont think she wants to wait for delivery.

Any suggestions appreciated.

  • Maplin? Although internet would be cheaper. Also could try PC world but I can't say if they would or would not have it.

Have just looked on Maplins but have no idea what the cable she needs is called, if it exists, - what am I looking for is there a name for it?

If she bought the one from the Halls, which I assume is the correct one just short, could she use a telephone extension to make it longer?

I'd make sure she's got the right spec for the cable.....get the wrong one and it just won't work properly...

Once you've got the right spec, try your local independant computer shops - they'll more than likely have far more knowledge and be able to advise much better than ....well, you know who ;) and if it's also local to her halls, they may well be familiar with the setup in there

just a quick point, if she insists on doing this, make sure she puts a large flat surface underneath the lappy, or before long she'll have clogged up the inside of it with fluff and dust, the vents will be blocked, it'll overheat, then you're looking at possibly costly repair bills...

soft pliable surfaces...kiss of death to laptops :(

  • I would suggest that when she has a cable she does not use the lappy on the bed, it will overheat and get the vents clogged up. Bedside table is fine though

She used her laptop in bed all the time when she was at home, no matter what I told her - now she has left no one to nag her so she will probably still do the same, though she does have a little bedside table at the side of her bed so may use that as she did not have that option at home.

Not sure she could be bothered to check out a local supplier as she is a CBA type of person that just wants the easy option. She is now in Nottingham I am in Manchester so I just want to be able to tell her what to do/where to go, that is easily accessible from Nottingham Centre where she is based.

If she bought the cable from the Halls (I got the impression it was approx 1 metre long, just enough from the socket to mid desk), would a phone extension work to take it to her bedside cabinet when needed? I am sending her a few things down tomorrow with a friend and if this would work I could put it in the bag.
  • Not sure about the above. But if you can get a photo of the wire in question, I'm sure someone on here will know what it's called etc.

And you're making it easy for her.
She's intelligent enough to get to Uni, but still relying on a parent to get a bit of wire?
    Move along, nothing to see.
