You had both rented from the worst car rental company by far (as you have now discovered).

Coincidently, in the Which report on car rental (which pours total scorn on Goldcar) you may be interested to learn that their 2 top car rental companies are both based in the Canary Islands. They are Auto Reisen and Cicar and both come with glowing reports. They are also very reasonably priced.

Last few rentals I've done in the Canaries/Balierics I've just walked into a car rental shop, there's loads in tourist areas, and paid cash, no credit card required. Usually minimal excess.
