Mig welders are more versatile, but more expensive. I have mig welded cars before (a long time ago now), and I'm not sure I would have found an arc welder up to the job. I found arc welders harder to get a neat finish with. If you say what you want to weld OP, people will be able to advise a bit more.
  • I had one of them welders last time they were selling them.
Not very good quality and would blow fuses on 13 amp but worked a bit better in the garage on the 30amp trip

the best thing about an arc is that you get to ask someone to pass the slag hammer! best named tool after a certain file...

My ARC welder plugs straight into a 13a mains socket and works fine. Only time i had problems was when i used a cheapie extention lead which kept tripping with the power the welder draws.

Do you have a cooker socket in the house? maybe worth using that if you have problems with a 13a socket.

With regards to the price, you really cant go very far wrong with an arc welder. Mine cost me 6quid from an auction and works a treat. Ive used it for no end of jobs, including building and welding massive security gates up from scratch.

Had it been a mig welder for 35quid then id be very worried!

Does it come with the wires and masks? If so, those alone very often cost more than 35quid!!!

This crossed my mind too... but the 13amp 3pin plug is still only rated at 13amp (obviously). Surely the plug fuse would just keep blowing.

I'm not. I'm just saying, if it keeps tripping on a 13amp ring, it will blow the 13amp plug fuse on a 30amp ring.

    Does that make sense?
  • the above plugs and sockets i posted, can be had for as little as £5.00 for the socket and £3.50 for the plug ..if you shop around the electrical factors ..

i think about the biggest welder you can plug in with a 13 amp plug is about 120 amp ..his welder is 160 amp

  • Hi,
    Hope someone can help!!!!
I bough an arc welder [aldi] and want to do some work up to 50 meters from where I am plugging it in (through one of those fancy commando sockets)...

I wana get an extension cable/reel & I understand that ideally I should get the 16 amp [yellow cable grade] if i want to use it for arc welding. Is this right????...is there 32-amp ones [I just want the option to be able to run the arc welder at full capacity for some jobs! it is the aldi 16-amp arch welder i have ]

If i get a 16 amp extension cable is will work fine with other not so hungry power tools/devices -- just like a house hold extension cable.

    Many thanks:

go to your local industrial electrical wholesaler ..

and get something called "SY cable" single phase ...very good stuff with Armoured braiding ..but still very flexable

    SY.jpg

    here's the 16 amp stuff

    prices below

    here's the 32 amp stuff

    http://www.idesystems.co.uk/open_product.asp?id=4814&catid=213

you will need different bigger comando plugs rated at 32 amp ..to carry over 16 amp ..which means different wall outlet

this is very heavy duty stuff ..and its cheaper than just the ordinary white cable

ive paid a lot less from a wholesaler than those prices ..less than £1 a meter

btw the plugs made by PCE are the best.

you want a male to go into the wall socket ..and an extension female.

a good price on the male would be under £5 ..female extension .under.£7

should be under £1 a meter for the cable

    all the best.markj
