nokia 3310 no menu trying to unlock

I have a nokia 3310 was on virgin pay as you go I no longer have sim card so bought a tesco sim card. Want to unlock it but when I put the card in it says invalid sim card and the menu bar doesn't appear. Any advise or does it need to be unlocked by the man on the market. Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Don't bother with paying the extortionate cost of calling the number on that site. You can unlock it for free.

On a pinned thread in the Mobile Phones board here on MSE, you can get help with this. Or there are free sites mentioned there, like Trycktill or Nokiafree. You need the original network and the serial (IMEI) number of the phone; press *#06# to display it. The instructions are also in Browntoa's OP.

Just for the record, the software is free on the posted site. The number is for people away from their PCs and is indeed very expensive.
But redux's link to browntoa's sticky is good (of course;) ).
