Want to know where your student loan is???? Follow this process…

More and more of you are contacting us asking why your loan hasn’t turned up. Unfortunately we are unable to speak directly to the Student Finance England on your behalf, but there is a process to follow if this is the case…

1. Firstly, phone SFE on 0845 300 50 90. SFE phone lines are notoriously busy at the moment and a lot of people are struggling to get through. To increase your chances of actually speaking to someone call early in the day. The call centre opens at 8 am so make sure you’re dialling the number at 7:59!

2. When you speak to the SFE try to ascertain what the situation is with your loan. Is there a delay? If there is, is it because…
a. You haven’t signed and returned your “online declaration form” after applying online (if you haven’t done this you should login to their account, download the form and return it ASAP), or;

b. Your assessment hasn’t been approved yet, or;

c. Student Finance England are awaiting validation of evidence, or;

d. The assessment of your eligibility isn’t complete yet (if it isn’t complete it means none of your loan is ready. If this part is complete, you will be paid the basic student loan)

3. If the delay is due to one of these get the name of the person you are speaking to, make a note of the time you spoke to them and ask what it is you need to do to move the application along.

4. If SFE say that everything is fine you should ask to provide consent so that the relevant department within your university can speak to SFE on your behalf (SFE need this consent in order to share some of your information with the university). To do this you will have to know which department within the university you want to speak for you. Then you will give SFE a password. In my experience, the Student Loans Company and Student Finance England sometimes tell students their loan is complete, when there may still be work to be done.

5. To counter this you need to speak with your university. When you speak to the university you first want to check that;
a. The university has received a SSAR (pronounced ‘sar’) file from the Student Loans Company. This tells the university that your loan is finished and is ready to pay. If your university hasn’t received this file, it means there is almost certainly an issue with your loan which will need to be sorted out with SFE.

b. If this is the case, ask you university to speak to SFE through the ‘practitioner’s helpline’ using the password you have set with SFE earlier. The university can then check on what needs to doing to complete your application.

c. If the university has received a SSAR file, check that they have confirmed your attendance to the Student Loans Company by sending back a SSAC (pronounced ‘sack’) file. If they have done this you loan should be on its;’ way and usually clears in your account 3 or 4 days after the SSAC file was sent back (providing the university has also received a SSAR file).

I hope this helps, and good luck!

    Why is it that SFE still fail to sort themselves out? They know the lines can get busy at this time of the year. They should employ more people to help students out with student loan problems.

    If you did it online you can see the status of your payments by logging in and going to the Payments section.....

    Just did this. I'm sure they said they were going to pay the maintenance loan on the 21st. It now says the 23rd and the status is 'submitted'. I assume that means it's been sent to my son's bank account?

    Yes. If it's first time it'll take an extra 3 working days.

    Does that mean he won't actually see it until next Monday?

    (Not a problem, but nice to know)

    Sorry I didn't read your post properly. It was submitted on 21st and should arrive on 23rd (3 working days for BACS transfers). Which bank does he bank with? If it's HSBC and he has online banking, he can log in and on the left it says "Pending Transactions" and should show in there.

    I had that on the first time, then every subsequant (sp?) time it came in on the day it was submitted.

    It is HSBC, yes. he said he'd checked and it hadn't arrived. I'm not sure he knows about looking at 'pending' payments.

    Oh well, it'll arrive when it arrives. It's all going on rent anyway...

  • If the payments section on the online SF account still says 'approved', does that mean the university have not yet confirmed attendance to SFE?
