Carcraft (Wednesbury) Question about Finance/Deposit/Rights
Options
I was in Carcraft on Sunday having had enough of repairing my Peugeot 106 and wanting to leave with an 09 plate Peugeot 107.
I went for the finance option with a minimum £100 deposit which was processed on my credit card right there and then.
However the finance didn't go through and they called late on Sunday to say that it had gone to a "sub prime" lender and that they would contact me directly to make me an offer. They never called and I wasn't given a number for them. Broad Oak I think the chap said they were called.
The chap at Carcraft said things would be easier if I had a guarantor for the finance application, but I have few people I can ask and £8k is a lot to ask of someone. I would rather go "sub prime" than do that.
Having waited a few days my mind turns to the fact that Carcraft have got £100 off my credit card and I have no car and no line of finance. Has anyone been here before? How do I get my £100 back?
I'm asking before I call them in case there is anything I need to be aware of, such as consumer rights, so I can phrase my call in the best way and avoid being passed around a lot. Also, if anyone here has an email address for Carcraft customer services I'd really appreciate it so I can get everything down in writing at least.
Thanks in advance for any help and advice on this.

Do you still want the car? The £100 may have been a non-refundable deposit - did you sign any paperwork??"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

At Carcraft you'd probably pay more than £2000 above the book price for the car (this is why they don't let you leave til you've signed something).
They also like to sell a warranty that actually doesn't cover anything that is ever likely to go wrong.
I'd write off the £100, go pay much less elsewhere and consider yourself lucky you didn't drive away in the new car.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I did and stupidly forgot to ask for copies on my way out. I did skim read the stuff for words like non-refundable and other things like that and couldn't see any. I'd be happy to take the car, if the finance arrangement is good enough.0 -

Thanks for this. It might come to that. I should have listened to my better instincts and started a savings plan instead. The 106 will hold out for another 6 months at least.0 -
Don't know where you live but CarCraft are not to be recommended, as prevously stated the stock is well over book.
£8000 for a 107, are you sure!

Don't forget that the 107, Aygo and C1 are the same car made by the same people in the same factory, so just find the cheapest.
You can get an entry level 1.0 VT 3 door C1 brand new for £6495.
These car are best tasted as cheap as you can, they are no nonsense cheap motoring, I would be tempted to buy a new one, though the 59 plate Auto shown in the second link isn't expensive.0 -
does the £8k take into account the cost of borrowing??
I would think your little 107 would cost more like £12k when finance is factored in. That is a LOT of wonga for a little car.
If you had gone through with this you would have looked back in 5/6years time and think "I would have happily paid £100 to avoid this ball and chain".
May not seem like it now but this hiccup has saved you an absolute fortune over the coming years. Count your blessings.
And don't go ANYWHERE near carshaft again.0 -
You are lucky - walk away even if it means losing the £100. 107s hold their value, but not by that much. A colleague bought a top spec 12 month old one for less than £6k from a main dealer.0
-
I assume £8k includes cost of borrowing - 09 107s are £6895 at Carcraft (which is insane since a C1 is £6495 brand new)0
-
This is fairly simple.
CarCraft can't demand 'non-refundable' deposits especially if they're using contracted finance houses.
If you feel they've taken £100 from you and not given you what they agreed simply call them/write to them and ask for your money back.
If they refuse or ignore you just phone your credit card company and do an indemnity against the payment.
Best of luck0 -
If you still want the car, arrange finance elsewhere then go to Carcraft, pay the balance and drive away.
But a far more sensible option would be to forget buying your car from Carcraft. Writing off the £100 would be one option, but I would go further than that. Ring them up, tell them that as they have not arranged any finance, you wish to cancel and demand your £100 back. Do not let them talk you into any other option - their sales staff can be very persuasive. If they refuse to give the deposit back (and they will) do the same in writing (recorded delivery). If they don't respond, take them to the small claims court. They can't take a deposit and then keep it because they were unable to arrange finance.
Then resolve never, ever to go to Carcraft again. They are a despicable company and embody pretty much all that is bad about the used-car business.0
