Which of these factors is making my car insurance quotes so astronomical???

I'm looking to buy a used car in the region of £700.

I am female, 35, have only ever been a named driver on my husband's insurance so have 0 years NCD.

I have been driving for 3.5 years and have no convictions etc.

I am a mature student, taking a professional postgrad qualification.

The cheapest quote I can find is £900, which seems insane! Is this mainly about the lack of NCD, or a combination of lots of factors? Could I get around the 'student' tag by saying I am a 'trainee xx'?

Any advice welcome. TIA.

It's simply your lack of NCD and low driving experience. What car are you insuring, what sort of location?

From what I know a number of factors adds up. Your postcode and the engine size of the car your going to buy. Then again, I may have been given wrong info. Where I live, crime is very high which is why my insurance is high and my engine is a 1.6. You should try and get a car with a small engine. Also I took out fully comp insurance which worked out cheaper, you just need to go and check websites independently and through compariosion sites Good luck and hope you get a good deal.

You should also speak to the insurance companies, brokers, and also to your husbands insurance company. See if any will give you a introductory discount equal to the 3 years on your husbands policy.

Take 70% off your premium and you will get a figure close to normal.
  • Thanks for these replies. I am looking at a 10-year old Fiesta, 1.25 engine. I do live in a northern city in a postcode area which is not great, although I will be keeping my car on my drive overnight and my actual street is quite a quiet one.

I will try and contact some people, as you suggest. I suppose I might have to consider asking my husband to be the registered keeper and just staying as a named driver?

If you're actually the main driver but are declared as a named driver on the policy in order to circumvent the high premiums, some insurers may void your cover if they find out, and any claim disallowed. If that happens you can kiss goodbye to EVER getting affordable insurance again.

another vote for talking to your OH insurnce comapy and trying to talk them into a discount

"We now need two cars and we've been so pleased with your service & prices we'd like to insure them both with you, oh and can you mirror the NCB across both policies please as other companies do"

I used to have a Fiesta MK4 (the same as a ten year old Fiesta would be) and the insurance was stupid. I swapped to a brand new Panda and my premium went down by £50! The Fiesta was worth £500 and the Panda is worth £6000.

I did a mock quote for my sister and a brand new C1 was £600 a year cheaper than the same Fiesta.

Insurance companies hate old cars and new drivers, there is just too much risk of injury claims and they are also easier to get nicked.

Try adding your husband as a named driver (even your mum or dad) & see if that makes a difference. It did with my daughters 1st insurance!
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!
  • OK, wuckfit, point taken about getting my husband to register ownership! :(

But good tip about adding him as the named driver, Paradigm - will give that a try. And try and sweet-talk his insurance company, vaio. :T
