Amazon - Free Delivery but charge for Return?

Just a quicky.

Bought an item from Amazon Market place. £24.97 Free Shipping

Returned the item (no longer required) and got £21.23 refunded

I asked why and got:

"Your item was returned as not required therefore the actual shipping and processing cost are not refunded."

Am i covered under distant selling reg? I paid to send the dam thing back so cost me £7 in total there and back which i think it bit cheeky.
I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!

    Possibly...op specifies "Market Place."

Even when free delivery is offered, if a product is returned, they'll sometimes deduct what the actual cost (or thereabouts) of delivery would have been, yes its cheeky as you'd expect a refund for the full amount you paid, and seeing as you forked out for the return anyway.

You could call Amazon on freephone 0800 496 1081 and/or look at the T & C's for more info.
  • Where you are withdrawing from your purchase within the first 7 working days after delivery and there has been no error on the seller's part, the seller will refund the cost of the item and the cost of sending the item to you as follows: (1) where you are returning an item that was part of a larger order, the seller will refund the per-item charge for delivery that you incurred, (2) where you are returning an entire order, the seller will refund the applicable per-item delivery charges and the per-delivery charge that you incurred, (3) sellers are only required to refund standard postage charges for items delivered outside the UK, (4) where your seller collects an item from you, the seller will have the right to recover the costs of collection from you, and (5) if you use a personalised pre-paid return label, the seller is entitled to deduct the return postage from your overall refund. Please note that, with respect to returns initiated during the first 7 working days after delivery, sellers are not required to refund the cost of giftwrapping, returning the item to the seller, and other services provided to you in connection with your purchase unless you return the item to the seller because of an error on the seller's part or because it is defective.

Thats what it says, from my interpretation they shouldn't be deducting postage. Just want to make sure i'm right/

I had this with an item I ordered from Amazon Marketplace.

It takes a while to find the sellers terms and conditions, but after many clicks, and buried in the small print, I found a clause explaining they would deduct the "free" outgoing postage if you sent the item back. There was something to say you'd agreed to the T&C's before you ordered, but I hadn't actually clicked through and read everything :o
Here I go again on my own....
  • Items returned within the seven-day cooling off period.
By law, customers located in the United Kingdom have the right to withdraw from the purchase of an item within seven working days of the day after the date the item is delivered. For more information see Your Statutory Rights online.

You only agree to the free shipping if you keep the item as the seller will most likely include shipping fee in the item price, Therefore the seller would make a loss if they issued full refund.

This would be against DSR though as the customer is entitled to have their delivery cost refunded.

OP, was this definitely bought from a business or is it a private seller?

    • To me it would seem that the criteria for a postage refund would depend upon what was returned and when (ie, a single item returned within the seven days 'cooling off' period etc) according to the T & C's posted above.

If your return fits the above T & C's, you should definately stick to your guns and (politely but firmly) remind those concerned that you are entitled to a refund of postage charges.

I had this experience with a playtrader (play.com) and it took several attempts but did finally get my postage refunded.
