    Sorry meant to ask what your Trusted Sites is set to as well?

    Is McAfee still enabled?

    If it is try disabling it and then try a download.

    a box popped up saying security settings would not allow a download

    Do you know what programme/software is saying that?

    Can you confirm that the PC/laptop has connected to the internet before?
  • He was trying to download adobe something or other when the box popped up, dont think it said what programme it was..when you try and download any AV it just sits there , doesn't say anything but does not do anything either. We connected the computer briefly when he first got it when the AV was in date and only used it for ebay etc not downloading anything. Is there anything anywhere that will stop downloads that we maybe need to turn on or something

    Click on tools
    Click on internet options
    Click on security
    Click on custom level

    scroll down till you get to downloads

    Click and enable automatic prompting for downloads
    Click and enable file download
    Click ok

    think we might have done it we went through all the enable/disable settings and changed his to the same as mine and it has now allowed us to download microsoft essentials..
    Thank you both for your help, its now scanning his computer..thank god for that...he was not happy...:)

    dogmaryx..you were spot on thanks ( although by pure luck we did find it ourselves but your info was totally correct)

    Don't forget to use MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL as advised in post 4.
