    Any anti virus pre-installed ?
  • Its popping up with mcafee is out of date, do you have to un-install that first? We had it on my computer when it ran out I then adding microsoft essentials I thought before getting rid of mcafee..
    But maybe not :)

they will clash if you try to installl one before removing the other.

    Best plan:
Download removal tool for your old AV
Download offline install files for your new AV
Check your MS security patches are all up to date.

    disconnect from the internet

uninstall old AV and run removal tool
    install new AV

    reconnect to the internet
check for updates for new AV before doing anything else

It may be stating the obvious - but do you actually have an internet connection.

As it's the first time the computer has been on the internet "Macafee out of date" sounds like it just needs updating. It would also acocutn as to why you can't download anything
  • Yes, it was connected to the internet, I could get around as normal just had out of date anti virus, my OH just used it for work offline and never connected it before. I tried microsoft essentials and thought it might just be that what was having problems but got the same result with the the ones.
Thanks for the other advice I will tell him what has been advised..
  • Have tried Alienrik's advice and the computer is saying it cant download the link ( on the page Rik gave) due to the security settings? Anyone know how to get round this?

    What security settings?

Is it Windows saying this or something else?

Which version of Windows are you using, have you been able to download anything before with this pc/laptop ie. Windows updates?
  • xp, not sure about downloading anything before as its not been used on line, but since yesterday when i tried to install AV it wont download anything, have removed most mcafee but it wouldn't not even download the removal tool rik supplied, or adobe

when he pressed download adobe as it said it needed it a box popped up saying security settings would not allow a download

Open Internet Options, click on the Security tab at the top.
What is your security level set to for the Internet Zone?
