Flea eggs in carpet. cost effective treatment? HELP!!!!

I've not got pets but have had a flea infestation for about two years.
I've just been using Bob Martin Home Fogger which works but only for a few months. Then I have to do it all over again.
I'm now fed up and want a more permanent option. I've contacted my council but they said they won't do it because I'm a council tennant.
I've rung around some companies but have been getting quotes of £100's of pounds to do a 2 bedroom flat. Ridiculous.
Please, please, please. Does anyone know of a cheaper company.
Thanks.

  • Hmm. i work for local council and ors treats council FOC if you make enough fuss! charge to others is about £50. you can do it yourself though. Flea eggs can last for ages in a carpet and is triggered when a suitable warm blooded thing a person) passes. they hatch then find out its not a cat after all! Buy either a powder (more economical) for fleas in the home or even a crawling insect spray/powder. vac first and empty the bag (otherwise they may hatch in it and escape outwards!). spray the powder all over (removing fish and other pets) and LEAVE. Dont vac for at least a week. prob best to stay out the house for an hour or 2 as well to be on safe side especially if you have asthma or something. May need a further treatment after 2 weeks but that shoud do it

just a thought, but what about using a steamer over the carpet, would that kill the eggs?

If you go to a local vet they have sprays you can use on furniture and carpets. You don't have to have an animal to buy them, but they kill the fleas at various life stages so they don't keep coming back.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

I've just had to go and buy a can of flea spray from the pet shop costing £8.99. I managed to drench the whole house with it so hopefully it will work. I have a very small house though so anything bigger would probably need 2 cans. The woman in the pet shop said it was a very bad year for fleas and loads of people have them so I don't feel so bad now.

Open the windows though when you do it as I suffer from mild asthma and I was gasping for breath at the end of it.

    Acclaim Household flea spray.

Around £12.15 per tin. Available from: http://www.petvetcare.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_Frontline_For_Cats.html

I've used it and it works very well. Killed all fleas and we have had no re-infestation for 2 years.

My auntie also had her local pest control officer come out and it was done free of charge.
I feel all itchy now reading this thread and will have to go and frontline my cat. Treat him about every couple of months but up to know fingers crossed haven't seen any fleas on him or in the house.

  • Have to say i am feeling for you, I had this problem last year and it nearly ended in divorce! They were eating me alive but never touched my wife, I would leap out of bed in the midle of the night because i was being attacked.
Tried numerous times to get shut of them.
Tried smoke bombs, sprays, powders and steam cleaning (Not at the same time) but none seemed to work by themselves. In the end I did all four straight after each other and hired and carpet cleaner, this has done the trick.
Never understood where they came from as i ahve never had pets.
  • I have also used the Acclaim flea treatment from the Vet. It costs more than those from pet shops but it worked first time. I thoroughly hoovered the carpet and sprayed Acclaim over the carpets of a 3 bedroomed house. One tin just about did it. I also opened all the windows and doors to ventilate the house after spraying and I
also had a good shower and change of clothes. Do throw away the hoover bag or clean the dust collector thoroughly otherwise you will reinfect your house next time you hoover.

The spray cans that you an buy from the shops/vets has never been strong enough to see of the little bu**ers that had nested in our carpets. In the end, we had to call out a pest control man who sprayed virtually everything - carpets, curtains, mattresses etc. He used a chemical that costs around £150 a box. The chemical stays within the carpet for months and when the fle comes into contact with it, it becomes deforms and dies. The bloke told me that where people often go wrong is by using quick spray/powder and that they forget fleas aren't just on the floor but will jump down in time.

We couldn't vac up for a week and had to wash all of the bedding, towels etc.

Our cat had the Black Spot treatment from the vet - small drop applied to the back of their neck (where they cannot lick) which is absorbed into the animals' blood system. Doesn't affect the cat but when the fleas bite into the cat, they are poisoned.
One hundred years from now it won't matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little better because, I was important in the life of a child.
