that's lying and fraud.
Best before and use by are two different things - happily you didn't suffer anything and it was a bb date not a use by, so legally there's no point contacting trading standards.
Ring them up and tell the truth and they should replace and provide avoucher. Given the thousands of items in a shop and the fact that they rely on people to cross check, occassional things will fall through the net."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0 -

Over the summer I bought a drink from M&S, and only realised after taking a mouthful that it was 3 weeks out of date. They gave me £80 worth of gift vouchers and two bottles of Chateux Neuf du Pape (one red and one white)...
Next time I'm in M&S, must remember to check their shelves thoroughly for out of date items.;)Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

This happened to me once, but with a carton of orange juice that was 1 month out of date. Even though I had a receipt showing my purchase, I was accused of lying and told that I must have bought this last month!!!
I was shocked and called for the manager who back the girl up... that's when I started crying as they were being quite rude to me. In the end, they were "kind" enough to let me exchange it.
Needless to say, I haven't been back to that store again. There is no need to run outside

Be careful to distinguish between "best before" and "use by" dates - the two are very different.
stores selling food that has gone off, or past its use by date, could commit and offence under the Food Safety regulations introduced this year (it is an offence to supply food not of the quality demanded). Usually, such occurrences (in department stores anyway) are not too common, and there are statutory defences available.
However, if you notice repeat occurrences, it would be best to contact the local Environmental Health or Trading Standards department, who will investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
For most cases though, a call to customer services will result in adequate compensation. I bought a load from Asda (90p) which had some mould on it. One phone call and 5 days later, I was sent a £5 voucher.Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!0
