mobile phone as home phone

My mother and father in law are not on the internet and are at present with BT.

They hardly ever use the phone and to be honest they could just as well have a PAYG Asda mobile phone instead of a landline.

The problem is they are getting on a bit and it is not easy for them to use a small mobile phone. They have a big button phone at present.

Is there any way to use a big button landline phone on a mobile network?

They would not be taking it out and about, why would they, they say, so any recommendations?

I bought this for my mother about 6-7 weeks ago. It works on any network apart from Three.

  • Saw a phone in P4U yesterday that has big buttons. As for the home phone thing, i would keep it for their sake just in case of an emergency. Flat batteries and network coverage could be an issue if at home. As for the mobile, get them one for when out and about.

One thing about their home phone is if the electricity goes off so does the phone. Network coverage is not a problem there is a cell tower just down the road from them.

I was thinking of something like a couple of cordless dect phones but on a mobile network.

And Exhortation, it is a big phone they want, not a credit card sized phone that could easily be lost down the side of a chair.

How about some sort of GSM to landline adaptor so you can still use your normal landline but via GSM instead of via BT
http://www.simcardhomephone.com/2009/11/gsm-to-rj11-adapter.html is an example i found from a quick search but there must be other similar ones

And the cell tower is powered by?????

You should retain the home line, if for any reason the cell does down or they lose the mobile phone, have no credit or they need it and it's batteries are flat they have no lifeline out.

Well, pardon me for trying to help. You said they wanted a big button phone and that is a big button phone.

Unless they have a wireless phone, the phone line shouldn't go down when the electricity goes off as phone exchanges operate on a separate supply.

Oops, sorry, there's me trying to be helpful again.
