2 year contract - can it be changed after 1 year has passed?

Hi everyone

In June 2009 I signed a 24 month contract for the (then) new iPhone 3GS on o2. It's £35 per month for unlimited data, 500 messages and 600 minutes. Recently I've been going over on my messages and it costs a fortune when you do! Someone told me that after a year of the contract you can ring them up and request a change to the tariff e.g. request less minutes for more texts.

Is this true? To me this seems wrong because if they know they're getting more money out of you by you going over every month then why would they help you save money by staying within your allowance each month?

Anyway, if this is true, or if anyone knows any other ways in which I could persuade o2 to help me out any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I've still got 8 months left of the contract to run so they're not exactly going to be falling over to help me!

Most mobile co's limit how much (if at all) you cna do down tarriff wise, but try aclling them, they'll probably be able to move you up.
  • if yore on a 18 month contract ts usually after 9 months 24 months it s a year
    What goes around-comes around
  • 500+ messages a month? Seriously impressed at the dedication that requires!
  • Phone up O2 customer service and ask to change to the current £35/month 24 month iPhone tariff, it'll include unlimited texts and of course is £35 a month, all current O2 tariffs include unlimited texts now so they'll have no problem changing that for you, it'll take 24 hours to take effect (you may have to request that it takes effect straight away.

O2 will allow you to upgrade your tariff any time so if you're using more than your 600 minutes you can ask to upgrade to a tariff with extra minutes, which of course will also have unlimited texts, if you're going this route you may wish to let it take effect on your next billing date otherwise your next bill will be quite a bit higher than usual.
  • I took out a business frequent user contract with O2 in July 2009, I was told I could upgrade after 12 months, anyway to cut a long story short I had problems with O2 and asked the adviser if I could downgrade now (September 2010) and she advised that as I hadn't taken the upgrade (New Phone) I could. I have changed my Tariff now to a SIM only for the duration of the contract which is approx 9 months. This has given me 800min (before i had 700) Unlimited Texts (same as before) and 750mb data (unlimited before) but the cost of the contract has changed from £50 a month to £30. I also had the insurance before which was £10 a month which I have now cancelled as they have changed the terms and increased the excess and only offered a reconditioned handset as opposed to a new replacement. I have now covered this under my bank Barclays on an account package for £5.
  • I upgraded my O2 contract last November. At that time I had 400 extra messages on my account which was due to run out in May this year. My new tariff had a 1000 message limit. So with the extra, I could send 1400 messages a month. I completely forgot about the extra 400 expiring in May & recently realised I was getting charged for all messages above my 1000 limit. I spoke to O2 yesterday & told them I wasnt happy that the 400 extra had been removed without my knowledge, (even though actually DID know!) & they added the unlimted text bundle to my account. In short, I think what i'm saying is speak to them, you never know what they'll offer!

  • Thanks for the replies and help everyone. It seems I've got a good chance of getting more messages! I'll phone them tomorrow and update this thread afterwards if I get anywhere!

  • OK just been on the phone, very good service I might add, and after 9 months of the contract you can change your tariff to a 2010 one. This means I now have unlimited texts and 600 minutes, BUT it comes with the newly imposed data cap of 500mb per month. This is ok for me as I only use about 50-100 mb but anyone that gets close to that limit be careful if changing your tariff. All this is still for £35 per month.

    Sorted!
